Lyft Silver is the transportation service that our elderly family members deserve.
Whenever my dad needs to order one of his fragrances, manage his online banking, or arrange for a ride, he looks for my siblings to assist him on his phone. For him and countless others like him, modern technology feels like a complicated digital labyrinth.
Lyft, a leading ride-hailing service in the US, is tackling this digital gap with a new offering designed specifically for our elderly loved ones. The service, named Lyft Silver, essentially exists as a distinct feature within the main app, boasting a much simpler user interface and additional accessibility enhancements.
How does Lyft Silver function?
Simply open the Lyft app, navigate to the “You” option in the bottom right corner, and select Lyft Silver. This action will promptly change the app’s interface to a more straightforward format with fewer options, quick access buttons, and larger text.
The font size has been increased by 1.4 times, and the home screen features just two buttons: one for booking a ride and another for scheduling it. “Our aim is to minimize visual distractions that could hinder the user’s experience or create confusion,” the company states.
For instances when older riders may require help, there is a noticeable “Get Help” button in the top right corner of the screen. Pressing it connects directly to a human agent available from 8am to 9pm EST.
What makes it unique?
Regarding ride options, Lyft Silver will provide only two choices: Standard and Extra Comfort. The company has established specific guidelines for vehicles transporting older passengers as part of this new service.
For instance, the step-in height of the vehicle must not exceed 18 inches, and the seat height must also stay within the 18-inch limit. Additionally, the cars need to be comfortable and spacious, meaning Lyft Silver will not utilize trucks, sports cars, or utility vehicles.
Once the ride commences, the details can be shared with trusted contacts like caregivers and family members for added reassurance. Initially, Lyft will also provide discounts for older riders in collaboration with AltaMed, Urban League, NOAH, SAGE, and Self Help for the Elderly.
Lyft Silver will begin early access on May 5th in the United States and will be available within the standard Android and iOS app. Those participating in the testing can share an invitation or gift link for Lyft Silver via an SMS link with their loved ones.
