The Pebble smartwatch is returning as the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2, with Eric Migicovsky, the original Pebble creator, leading the project. Many fans of the original model, as well as those eager for some nostalgic technology on their wrists, likely pre-ordered one of the new versions based solely on this promise. For the first time since its announcement, Migicovsky has provided a brief glimpse of the new watch in operation.

During a YouTube podcast titled Tick Talk, we see one of the very first Core 2 Duos not just worn on a wrist but actively used. The device is still under development, as indicated by the hardware being temporarily secured with tape to allow easy access to its internals. However, the key takeaway is that the new software is demonstrated, giving a good indication of what to expect when it arrives.

Migicovsky navigates through the menu using the side buttons, accesses the alarm functionality, and displays the event notification page. He also connects the smartwatch to a phone via Bluetooth and synchronizes various watch faces, many of which will be recognizable to anyone who owned the original Pebble.

Additionally, we got a closer look at the strap for the Core 2 Duo. It is crafted from silicone and features a standard clasp, along with a slide-through keeper to prevent the strap's end from shifting, similar to the Sport Band on the Apple Watch. The charger dongle includes a USB C port integrated into the charger itself and magnetically attaches to the back of the smartwatch. Notably, it's branded as Nomad, and Migicovsky shared that this well-known accessory company initially designed it for the first Pebble, and it's being repurposed for this model.

While the Core 2 Duo is still being refined and elements like a live clock face aren't functional in the video, it’s exciting to see how rapidly progress is being made, and how closely the Core 2 Duo resembles the original Pebble. The design, software, and appearance on Migicovsky’s wrist are likely to generate enthusiasm among those who have pre-ordered the smartwatch and may encourage others to make a purchase as well.

The 21-minute Tick Talk podcast is also worth watching beyond the demonstration, as Migicovsky discusses the impact of tariffs on the pricing of the new Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 smartwatches, along with some planned software changes and additional features.

The latest Android 16 beta reveals a substantial UI overhaul

Google has been releasing multiple beta versions of Android 16 for an extended period, but many of the significant updates remain hidden. We have confirmation that Google plans to unveil new design alterations at this month's I/O event, with some of these changes already visible in the latest and final beta release.

Android Authority has successfully activated the concealed design features in Beta 4, highlighting various subtle and more noticeable adjustments to the UI. Since these features are still “off” even in the final beta, they will likely not be included in the initial stable release of Android 16. Instead, Google may enable them in a future quarterly update. Hopefully, more information will be available during the upcoming developer conference.
