If you enjoy Wordle and Connections, Puzzmo may become your next daily obsession.

If you’ve incorporated puzzle games like Wordle and Connections into your routine this past year, you might find another daily obsession on the horizon. Puzzmo is a new platform that transforms the concept of a newspaper puzzle page into a responsive web interface compatible with various devices. Users can sign up to join the free platform today, which also offers a $40 annual subscription that unlocks additional features such as experimental games and leaderboards. This ambitious project is a collaboration between Orta Therox and Zach Gage, a popular game designer known for mobile titles like Knotwords and Good Sudoku. His latest endeavor has been years in the making and serves as a comprehensive hub for Gage’s puzzle collection, aiming to compete with well-established platforms like The New York Times.

The New York Times has introduced its latest game title following the success of Wordle, and it centers around math. Digits requires players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently play its beta version for free online.

In Digits, players must match a target number using six available numbers, applying addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to get as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers need to be utilized, so this game will challenge your math skills as you combine numbers and formulate equations to achieve proximity to the target number.

Players earn a five-star rating for matching the target number exactly, a three-star rating for being within 10 of the target, and a one-star rating if they get within 25 of the target number. Currently, players can access five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers as well. I tried today’s puzzle and found it to be an engaging number-based game that should resonate with those who enjoy puzzle games such as Threes or other New York Times titles like Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article unveiling Digits and discussing The New York Times Games team's game development process, The Times mentions that they will use this free beta to address bugs and determine if it's worthwhile to enter a more active development phase “where the game is coded and the designs are finalized.” So, enjoy playing Digits while you can, as The New York Times may decide to cease development if the response isn’t as anticipated.

Digits' beta is currently available for free on The New York Times Games website.

If you logged onto Twitter a year ago, you may remember seeing your feed filled with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Although it debuted in 2021 and gained popularity in December of that year, Wordle became an instant cultural phenomenon in early 2022, nearly impossible to avoid without using a muted words list. It was an exception in gaming success stories, appealing to a vast audience due to its straightforward nature.

Wordle’s success grew rapidly alongside its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced its acquisition of the puzzle game from creator Josh Wardle for an undisclosed seven-figure sum—an unexpected move that nearly overshadowed Sony’s announcement of acquiring Destiny 2 developer Bungie just hours earlier. This acquisition raised concerns among fans, fearing that a corporate buyout of such an independent game could diminish its essence.
