Miami Vice, the legendary neo-noir police series from the 1980s, is making a return to theaters. Director Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick, has agreed to direct Miami Vice, based on a script by Eric Warren Singer, which is currently being revised by Dan Gilroy, a writer from Andor.

As reported by Deadline, Kosinski might not tackle Miami Vice immediately. He still has to direct an unnamed UFO film for Apple Studios with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. His upcoming movie, F1, is set to be released this summer by Warner Bros. Pictures and Apple Studios.

When it premiered on NBC in 1984, Miami Vice was revolutionary and encapsulated the essence of MTV with its style and music. The show was created by Anthony Yerkovich and starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Michael Mann, the director, contributed unique visual elements that contributed to its immense popularity during its five-season run.

In 2006, Mann revived the franchise with a Miami Vice film that featured Colin Farrell as Sonny Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs. This film grossed $164.2 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $150 million and has since become recognized as a cult classic nearly two decades after its release.

In 2017, NBC was working on a reboot of the Miami Vice TV series, but that project never aired. The new movie adaptation has been in the works for some time, and Kosinski's participation may provide the necessary momentum to push it into production. It remains uncertain whether Kosinski plans to set the film in contemporary times or bring Miami Vice back to its '80s origins.

Since the project is still in the early stages of development, there are currently no cast members linked to Miami Vice. Universal has not yet announced a release date for the film.
