Character.AI, a well-known AI chatbot service, has introduced a new safety feature called Parental Insights, which provides parents with reports on their children's activities on the platform. The company revealed this new measure in a blog post on Tuesday, which offers parents a weekly summary of how their teens engage with Character.AI. This includes their daily average time spent on the app, the characters they interact with the most, and the duration of time spent with each character. However, this overview will not include the details of the chatbot conversations, as those remain private.
Teen users under 18 can choose to share their Character.AI usage statistics with their parents or guardians by simply entering their email addresses in the app’s settings and sending an invitation to view this information. Parents do not need to have a Character.AI account in order to access their teen's weekly usage data.
Parental Insights has been introduced alongside various features aimed at addressing parental concerns about children's excessive time on Character.AI and numerous lawsuits claiming exposure to harmful content on the service, such as inappropriate sexual material and messages promoting self-harm. In response to these issues, Character.AI has updated the platform to transition underage users to an AI model that is designed not to deliver sensitive or suggestive content, to identify and address any actions that contravene service guidelines, and to notify users if they spend an hour on the app. Additionally, they have included a disclaimer in chats and on their app marketplace listings to remind users that the AI characters are not real and that their conversations are fabricated.
Parents should view any invitation emails from Character.AI, sent at the request of their teen to view their weekly activity stats, as a sign of trust. These reports may provide reassurance that their teen seeks guidance on utilizing the app wisely.
