      Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have gained significant popularity in recent years, leading to a variety of mid-size plug-in hybrid SUVs that cater to the luxury market. PHEVs enable drivers to use electric power for city driving while still having the convenience of a traditional gas engine for better performance. The 2025 BMW X5 is one of these mid-size plug-in hybrids; although it might not appeal to everyone, it has a lot to offer.

      The 2025 model features some useful upgrades, notably a longer electric range, while maintaining the impressive performance that defines the X5 in its class. However, it faces renewed competition in its price bracket. Does it have what it takes to truly stand out?

      Design

      The 2025 BMW X5 xDrive50e retains the elegant and polished look characteristic of BMW, seamlessly combining modern design features with a sleek, angular profile. The front boasts BMW's iconic kidney grille, paired with slanted headlights that lend the SUV an aggressive demeanor. The exterior incorporates black accents, which blend into our test vehicle finished in Carbon Black Metallic, giving it a stealthy appearance. Personally, I appreciate the black accents paired with a blue exterior, although I've only viewed it in images, not in person.

      From a side view, the X5 exhibits a mix of sharp lines and gentle curves, with a slightly sloped roofline enhancing its sporty vibe. It measures 197 inches in length, 79 inches in width, and 70 inches in height, clearly positioning it within the mid-size SUV category.

      Our test model included the M Sport Package Pro, which adds performance-inspired exterior features such as 21-inch M Y-Spoke wheels, an illuminated kidney grille for a futuristic flair, and striking red brake calipers that contrast nicely with the darker paint. While these enhancements are not essential and come at an extra cost, they provide additional style for those willing to invest.

      Interior and Tech

      Inside the BMW X5 xDrive50e, the luxurious BMW ambiance continues. The brown stitched leather elements feel premium and cozy, complemented by a well-constructed and upscale cabin.

      The X5 xDrive50e is also roomy, providing ample space for both front and rear passengers. Unlike some competitors, this model is strictly a two-row SUV, meaning it accommodates five passengers comfortably. The cargo space is generous, offering 33.1 cubic feet with the second row up, and 71.2 cubic feet when the seats are folded down, more than sufficient for luggage, groceries, or larger items. I had no trouble fitting a larger stroller and several grocery bags, all while the second-row seats remained upright.

      The vehicle's technology is largely as expected. A curved 14.9-inch infotainment display graces the dashboard, accompanied by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, both of which are sharp and bright. The system supports wireless connections for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is convenient considering the built-in software may not be as user-friendly. The software operates on BMW’s iDrive 8.5 platform, which is adequate but can be a bit confusing. You’ll become accustomed to it, and you can display CarPlay or Android Auto information via a widget on the home screen for easier access for those who prefer their phone’s interface while still utilizing BMW's native features.

      Range and Charging

      The BMW X5 xDrive50e can travel up to 38 miles solely on electric power, which is respectable but not extraordinary. If your daily commute is brief, this range should suffice without consuming gas. However, for longer commutes exceeding 19 miles each way, you will likely engage the gas engine before reaching home. Once the battery depletes, the X5 xDrive50e functions well as a typical hybrid, but to maximize its efficiency, regular charging is essential.

      Like any PHEV, the X5 xDrive50e is worth considering only if you have access to charging at home or work. Its limited electric range means frequent charging is necessary, especially if you aim to rely on electric-only mode as much as possible. Relying on public charging stations daily would be inconvenient; thus, home charging is the preferred option.

      Charging is simple—connecting to a Level 2 charger can fully charge the battery in about 3-4 hours. While it’s not exceptionally rapid, it’s quite reasonable for overnight charging at home or during work hours.
