AI has been integrated into the Google Shopping experience for some time. In October of last year, Google began displaying an AI-generated summary with suggestions for the products users are searching for, along with customized product listings. A month earlier, the Shopping tab introduced an AI-driven virtual try-on feature that accommodates various body shapes to demonstrate appropriate size fitting. Google is now rolling out another AI-enhanced update that will actually transform your fashion concepts into a digital garment, which will help in locating similar real clothing items.

      How AI will transform shopping

Imagine you are searching for “pink socks with blue flowers and red polka dots.” Inputting that request may not automatically yield real products that fit that description since it relies on whether a seller has appropriately tagged their products and images.

With AI-generated image templates, Google plans to shift from relying on text or metadata matching to utilizing vision-based matching for discovering such items.

When you search for an item with a very specific set of fashion criteria and scroll past the product listings in the Shopping tab, you will encounter a new feature titled “Can’t find it? Create it.” Users can also find this option under the “Create & Shop” label in the left sidebar.

By selecting it, you will see a text box where you can input a precise description of your ideal clothing item. This functions similarly to text-to-image AI tools like OpenAI’s Dall-E in ChatGPT or Google’s Imagen AI engine.

The AI will produce a photorealistic image of your clothing idea, offering a few variations. Users can select the one they prefer and scroll down to view similar shoppable items listed online.

This feature was initially introduced as an experiment in October last year but was limited to users participating in the Search Generative Experience (SGE) within Search Labs. It is now widely accessible to all users in the US market on mobile devices.

      Expanded options for virtual try-ons

Google is also broadening the capabilities of its virtual try-on (VTO) tool. Previously, it only allowed users to try on tops. As of today, users will have the option to virtually try on bottoms, including pants and skirts.

In addition to clothing, Google is placing emphasis on beauty and makeup products. When users shop for these items, they can click on the “See the looks on you” tool, which activates a front camera preview of their face.

In this feature, users can simply tap on any product they see, which will then be applied to their face using augmented reality for a makeover. Google claims it has enhanced the AR try-on experience by upgrading the framework with its Gemini AI models.
