Has Lenovo's latest solar-powered PC potentially transformed the future of laptops?
Lenovo
At the Mobile World Conference (MWC) in Barcelona today, Lenovo unveiled a proof of concept for "a PC powered by the sun." The entire lid of this laptop features a high-quality solar panel with a conversion efficiency of 24%, matching the best rooftop panels available. Lenovo states that just 20 minutes of direct sunlight can provide up to one hour of video playback on the device. Even in low-light settings, the laptop can generate enough power to keep its battery charged while idling. This impressive efficiency is made possible through “Back Contact Cell” technology and an advanced tracking system that continuously optimizes the charger’s settings for maximum energy conservation and stability.
Remarkably, apart from the unique solar panel grid design on the lid, this laptop appears indistinguishable from a regular one. It measures only 15mm in thickness and weighs 1.22kg, making it the world’s first ultraslim solar-powered PC. Its specifications are also quite impressive—Lenovo envisions this 12-inch laptop running on Intel Core Ultra processors with up to 32GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, and an OLED display. Additional features include a 50.2 Wh battery, a 2M IR camera, four speakers and microphones, and three USB-C ports.
For those looking to harness the sun's energy, Lenovo also demonstrated a proof of concept for a portable solar panel kit and power bank. This device allows users to charge the power bank by connecting the USB-C solar panel to a bag, tent, tree, or any other sunny location. This would be particularly useful for powering your Yoga Solar PC without having to sit in direct sunlight; you could set up the solar kit to collect energy for future use. It would also serve as a great accessory for anyone wanting to participate in solar power without having to buy a new PC.
Currently, it is unclear how much solar power a typical user might generate, but even minimal solar energy is better than none. This prototype suggests Lenovo has successfully developed a solar-powered PC without compromising on size, design, or specifications. This raises the question of why solar panels aren't incorporated into our PCs more widely.
Nevertheless, the price for such a PC is not yet known, and a high cost could impact accessibility. However, the sooner designs like this hit the market, the quicker prices will likely decrease. Here’s hoping Lenovo brings this idea to fruition, as solar-powered PCs could represent a significant advancement for the industry.

Lenovo has dramatically improved my favorite gaming laptop.
I've only awarded a perfect score to one gaming laptop—the Lenovo Legion 9i. Now, Lenovo is enhancing that model at CES 2024.
There are several major upgrades. First, Lenovo is changing the processor to Intel's new Core i9-14900HX and incorporating the Raptor Lake refresh chip into mobile. While I don't anticipate a significant performance boost over the previous version—reference our review of the desktop Core i9-14900K for insights—it's still the latest technology.
