The Mobile World Congress is primarily focused on mobile technology, yet each year, Lenovo showcases several computing concepts at the event. In previous years, we’ve seen innovations like the ThinkPad X1 Fold, a rollable PC, and even a rolling phone, but this year's concept stands out as one of my top choices for folding laptops.

The ThinkBook Flip AI PC Concept may not have the most approachable name, but it offers a novel solution to a common issue for PC users: expanding screen space while on the move. Lenovo's solution is an 18-inch display that folds outward and provides additional benefits based on user requirements.

I had the opportunity to try it out this morning, and I was pleasantly surprised by its user-friendliness. Notably, Lenovo has implemented several clever software features that elevate it beyond just a basic folding laptop, which is why it’s become my new favorite concept in this category.

While folding laptops have yet to achieve mainstream acceptance, Lenovo has already introduced one to the market. The ThinkPad X1 Fold broke new ground with its traditional book-style folding design, delivering enough power to handle most tasks.

However, the ThinkPad X1 Fold also demonstrated that this form factor didn’t resonate with many customers. In contrast, the ThinkPad Flip AI PC presents a new design that is sure to be far more practical.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Flip AI PC features an 18-inch screen that folds outward, effectively creating two 13-inch displays stacked on top of one another. When folded, the display functions as an external screen, making it ideal for small presentations, sales pitches, and more.

Innovative software makes it more than just a folding display

One potential drawback of the Lenovo ThinkPad Flip AI PC is how the Windows operating system manages the dual displays. Instead of being recognized as two separate screens, it is treated as a single display, complicating the task of maximizing the screen's utility. Nonetheless, Lenovo showcased some smart software solutions that help address these concerns.

The first feature allows users to easily deactivate the outer display via a virtual button positioned on the part of the screen that bends. This is helpful for conserving battery life or maintaining privacy during use.

The second feature is even more beneficial: with a simple swipe across the hinge, users can quickly display applications or presentations from the main screen. This effectively utilizes the outward folding display as a secondary monitor, enhancing how Windows recognizes and manages secondary screens.

      More than a folding screen

The Lenovo ThinkPad Flip AI PC Concept is also noteworthy for one additional reason: its uniquely designed trackpad, which is not where you would typically expect it to be.

This trackpad incorporates various quick settings and features three selectable modes, easily switched by tapping one of the mode buttons located on the right side of the trackpad.

These modes provide quick access to a number pad, PC quick settings, and media controls. It also includes adjustable backlighting and functions as expected. While I appreciate the trackpad gestures on Asus laptops, this implementation is more striking and practical in terms of enhancing the trackpad's functionality.

The ThinkPad Flip AI PC Concept can also function as a tablet. Instead of carrying a separate tablet, flipping the screen allows you to use the outer display in tablet mode. Although you cannot use the keyboard or mouse in this mode, the touchscreen enables you to utilize it as a Windows-powered tablet for simple tasks, such as watching videos.

Why the ThinkPad Flip AI PC Concept is exciting

You might be questioning the necessity of these features, but there are several scenarios where this laptop could be advantageous.

For instance, tech journalists like myself would find it beneficial. I’ve previously used dual-screen Yoga laptops, and having a secondary display is fantastic for covering major product launches while traveling. Additionally, it can be incredibly helpful for daily work while on the move, enhancing my productivity in both situations.

Other professionals could also make good use of this device. Conducting presentations in a café? Just flip the screen. Selling financial, automotive, or other products that involve reviewing documents and data? Flip the screen over. As you can see, there’s a common thread in these use cases, making it an ideal solution for anyone seeking a secondary or larger screen while on the go.

Will this ever become a commercial product?

As indicated by its name, the ThinkPad Flip AI PC Concept is exclusively a conceptual product. Therefore, it is uncertain if it will develop into a commercially available item, and even if it does, it's possible that only some features will be included in the final version.

Nevertheless, Lenovo has a solid track record of transforming conceptual designs into market-ready products. The original ThinkPad X
