The influence of smartphones on children and young users has been extensively documented, particularly regarding their contribution to mental health challenges, body image problems, exposure to unsuitable content, and digital addiction. At MWC 2025, HMD introduced the Fusion X1, a device that aims to provide a secure smartphone experience for kids. The company asserts that this latest model features "built-in, operating system-level parental controls to guarantee a safe and age-appropriate digital experience." Parents can tailor their children's access to specific apps and internet browsing, impose restrictions on social media use, and set limits on screen time.

The core of these safety and wellness measures is the Xplora app, enabling parents to modify settings on the device and adjust usage in real time. Guardians will have the capability to remotely manage their child's Fusion X1, which also includes an emergency SOS calling feature. Additionally, a dedicated School Mode is available to limit access to certain applications and functionalities, preventing distractions during educational hours.

Although intended for a younger audience, the Fusion X1 does not compromise on hardware quality. It boasts a 108-megapixel camera and a substantial 5,000mAh battery for all-day use. Notably, the phone includes a 3.5mm headphone jack as well.

The device features a 6.56-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate, and is powered by Qualcomm’s entry-level Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. HMD will also offer “outfits,” which are modular accessories that attach to the back of the phone, including a ring light, rugged case with built-in battery, or gamepad, through a pin-based connector system.

The HMD Fusion X1 is priced at GBP 229 (about $288) and is anticipated to be available around April or May, depending on the region.

The iPhone 16e has now arrived, but is it the right choice for you?

It’s decision time, everyone. After the considerable buzz following its announcement, the iPhone 16e is now in stores. This model, which is Apple’s budget option, offers many appealing features, particularly if you fit into the target demographic for the device. However, if you're considering purchasing a new iPhone right now, another option may be a better fit: the iPhone 14.

Following the announcement of the iPhone 16e, it became evident that this model resembles the iPhone 14 more closely than the iPhone SE 3, which many initially thought would be succeeded by the rumored “iPhone SE 4.” The iPhone 16e could prove to be a superior device overall. Therefore, it's hardly surprising that the launch of the iPhone 16e has prompted the discontinuation of both the iPhone SE 3 and the iPhone 14.

Google discreetly addressed a USB vulnerability that left over a billion Android devices at risk.

In the first week of February, Google released its regular Android Security Bulletin, outlining security vulnerabilities that have been resolved to enhance the platform's safety. Typically, these vulnerabilities are announced once fixed unless there are exceptional circumstances.

February represented one of those rare cases concerning a kernel-level, high-severity vulnerability that was still being actively exploited at the time of the bulletin's release. The release note states, "There are indications that CVE-2024-53104 may be under limited, targeted exploitation."

The ChatGPT app may soon allow for AI video generation with Sora.

OpenAI rolled out its Sora text-to-video generation tool late in 2024 and expanded its availability to the European market at the end of February this year. Reports suggest that Sora’s next step is integration with the ChatGPT app.

According to a TechCrunch report, which references internal discussions, OpenAI is preparing to incorporate the video creation AI tool into ChatGPT. Up to now, the video generator has only been accessible via a web client and has been exclusive to paid subscribers.
