If you can only watch one Netflix show in February 2025, make sure it's this one.

      In 2024, Netflix added several iconic sitcoms from the 1990s, such as Martin, The Jamie Foxx Show, and Reba, allowing these shows to connect with a new audience in the streaming landscape. This month, the platform is once again making waves with A Different World, which we believe is the must-watch Netflix series for February.

      This is particularly important because A Different World has not been easily accessible for streaming or digital purchase. Additionally, it has suffered due to the fallout from the Bill Cosby controversy and the allegations of sexual assault against him, which have left The Cosby Show in a state of limbo. Being a spinoff of The Cosby Show, A Different World did feature characters from the original, yet it carved out its own distinct identity as a comedy, particularly after the departure of Lisa Bonet, who was the show's original lead.

      While Cosby was the creator of A Different World, showrunner Debbie Allen revitalized the series from season 2 until the end of its run. Initially intended as a comedy focused on Denise Huxtable (Bonet) attending Hillman College, a historically Black institution, the series had to adapt following Bonet's exit due to her pregnancy. Instead of being detrimental, this change prompted A Different World to evolve beyond a mere spinoff.

      The series boasted an excellent cast.

      Bonet's leading role in A Different World stemmed from her breakout performance on The Cosby Show, making it logical for her to lead a new series under the same brand. The supporting cast was equally impressive, featuring Marisa Tomei in the first season as Maggie Lauten, Denise's best friend and one of the few white students at Hillman. The show struck gold with Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison, who portrayed Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, respectively. Initially intended as just friends of Denise, Whitley and Dwayne became the central characters once Bonet left, which speaks volumes about their performances, allowing the series to continue for an additional five seasons.

      The ensemble, including Sinbad, Dawnn Lewis, and Darryl M. Bell, along with later additions like Cree Summer, Glynn Turman, and Jada Pinkett Smith, formed a strong comedic team. The show was never focused solely on any one character, which ultimately became one of its key strengths.

      It features a gradual romantic storyline.

      Dwayne was initially attracted to Denise, but with her absence, the show gradually shifted towards a romance between Dwayne and Whitley, who were very different from each other. This shift proved beneficial for both characters, as the writers developed them into more complex individuals. Whitley, in particular, became more nuanced and less superficial compared to her portrayal in the first season.

      The series progressively showcased Whitley and Dwayne building a committed relationship. Although it was clear that they were ultimately meant to be together, there were moments that suggested their chance might be lost forever.

      It was designed for its time.

      A Different World - Rodney King

      Primarily a comedy, A Different World was not afraid to tackle sensitive issues. While Cosby would not allow Denise to be depicted as a pregnant teen, the series addressed racism and classism head-on. Life on campus contrasted sharply with the outside world, as illustrated in the season 6 premiere, which featured Dwayne and Whitley amidst the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles.

      Some episodes may appear mild by today's standards, but the show was innovative for its time, and its association with Bill Cosby has not lessened its significance.

      The arrival of A Different World on Netflix is no accident; the platform is working on a sequel series set at Hillman College. This upcoming show will reportedly follow Dwayne and Whitley's daughter as she navigates her college experience, though details about returning original cast members and the premiere date remain unclear. In the meantime, A Different World will continue to shine at Hillman, introducing a new generation to one of the best comedies of the '80s and '90s.
