Fireflies introduces Voice Agents for call screening, sales, and support purposes.
Fireflies has introduced AI voice agents that conduct screening interviews, sales discovery, and support calls, reportedly facilitating over 40,000 conversations across 2,100 organizations in 97 countries. In the context of the EU AI Act, recruitment and candidate evaluation systems are categorized as high-risk under Annex III, with compliance obligations postponed until December 2, 2027, although the transparency requirement and GDPR are currently applicable.
The main application in recruitment is particularly prominent. After a screening call, a candidate scorecard is automatically created and integrated into the existing tools used by the team. One customer quantified this benefit, noting that nearly a third of WebFX’s new recruits “started with a Voice Agent,” according to its talent acquisition lead.
Fireflies claims that its recruiters have saved 800 hours due to this process. The agents operate on a usage-based credit system across all subscription plans and are capable of supporting over 30 languages.
In the EU, this falls under regulation rather than being simply a feature aimed at enhancing productivity, as Annex III of the AI Act designates recruitment and candidate assessment systems as high-risk. The obligations associated with this classification were initially set to take effect last month, but the Digital Omnibus has extended the timeline to December 2, 2027, resulting in a postponement of sixteen months.
One obligation remains unchanged. Article 50 mandates that a provider must inform users when they are interacting with an AI system, specifically mentioning automated phone systems. This requirement will be in effect starting August 2, 2026, irrespective of the risk classification, and must be clearly communicated during the first interaction.
Additionally, data protection laws remain unchanged. Article 22 of the GDPR continues to regulate decisions made solely through automated processes, in a landscape where TNW has reported candidates using avatars in interviews conducted by other avatars.
Fireflies does not assert that a machine makes decisions; instead, its agents pre-qualify candidates and provide a scorecard to a recruiter who ultimately makes the hiring decision. This distinction is likely to be a point of contention. TNW has reported on a developing AI-on-AI dynamic that is transforming recruitment from both perspectives.
The figure of 97 countries is noteworthy. This statistic relates to the company’s operations, but it does not clarify how many of those conversations involved individuals from the EU. The deadline extension has merely shifted paperwork rather than altering obligations. The disclosure requirement is currently in force, while the high-risk regulatory framework will be implemented in December 2027, with TNW also covering tools designed to identify hiring discrimination.
