Physical ID cards may soon become obsolete. From driver’s licenses to national identification cards, an increasing number of our identity documents are transitioning to our mobile devices, and Google aims to ensure this shift is secure. The company has recently announced an enhancement to its hardware security initiative to bolster the reliability of digital IDs on Android smartphones.

      What’s changing?

Google is rebranding and broadening its Android Ready SE program, now calling it the Android Digital Credential Alliance. The initial program, which began in 2021, brought together chip manufacturers to create a secure hardware framework for digital credentials on Android devices. The new alliance advances this effort by involving governmental organizations, smartphone manufacturers, and wallet developers, ensuring that your digital ID is universally accepted and meets rigorous security standards.

How does your phone maintain ID safety?

Google’s framework is based on what it refers to as a chain of trust. This begins at the hardware level, where a secure chip called Strongbox operates to physically separate your credentials from the rest of your device, akin to a vault within a vault. Your ID is only shared after it’s unlocked using your face, fingerprint, or PIN, preventing unauthorized access to your license.

This same security mechanism underpins Google Wallet and serves as the benchmark for the European Digital Identity Wallet, which is being implemented across several countries.

What does this mean for you?

For those residing in the US or other regions that support digital IDs, this development should increase access to strong security measures for smartphones, making them comparable to what high-end phones currently offer. It also alleviates some of the burdens on governments and businesses developing digital ID frameworks, as the necessary security infrastructure is already integrated into Android.
