Physical ID cards may soon become obsolete. From driver's licenses to national identification cards, an increasing number of our identity documents are transitioning to our smartphones, and Google aims to ensure that this transition occurs securely. The company has just unveiled an expansion of its hardware security initiative to enhance the trustworthiness of digital IDs on Android devices.

      What changes are being made?

Google is rebranding and expanding its Android Ready SE program into the Android Digital Credential Alliance. The original initiative, which began in 2021, united chip manufacturers to establish a secure hardware framework for digital credentials on Android devices. The new alliance elevates this effort by incorporating government agencies, smartphone manufacturers, and wallet developers, ensuring that your digital ID is universally compatible and meets stringent security requirements.

How will your phone secure an ID?

Google’s framework is based on what it refers to as a chain of trust. It initiates at the hardware level, where Strongbox operates within a dedicated secure chip that physically separates your credentials from the rest of your device, resembling a safe within a safe. Your ID is only shared after you unlock it using your face, fingerprint, or PIN, preventing unauthorized access to your license.

This same security system is already utilized by Google Wallet and serves as the benchmark for the European Digital Identity Wallet, which is being implemented in several countries.

What does this imply for you?

If you reside in the U.S. or another region that supports digital IDs, this initiative should lead to more smartphones having access to the high-level security typically associated with premium devices. This also alleviates some burden on governments and organizations developing digital ID systems, as the security framework is already integrated into Android.
