TCL has expanded its budget tablet range today with two new 11-inch models: the TAB A1 and TAB A1 NXTPAPER. Both tablets have identical core hardware, so the decision primarily depends on the display type and whether you'd like a stylus included. Prices start at $189.99, positioning them as some of the most budget-friendly options in TCL's current tablet lineup.

TCL TAB A1, the simple budget option

The standard TAB A1 is priced at $190 and features an 11-inch, 2.1K display that boasts a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. It is powered by a MediaTek Helio G100 chip, equipped with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, supported by an 8,000mAh battery capable of 20W charging. The device includes quad stereo speakers, a 5MP front camera, and an 8MP rear camera, all housed within a slim 0.24-inch body.

This tablet allows for microSD expansion up to 2TB and is available in a Space Blue color. The Helio G100 is merely a slight update of a processor introduced in 2022, so it may struggle with heavy multitasking or graphics-intensive applications.

TCL TAB A1 NXTPAPER, designed for reading and note-taking

The NXTPAPER variant is priced at $250 and shares the same processor, RAM, storage, and battery as the standard TAB A1. Its distinguishing feature is TCL's paper-like display coating, which reduces glare during extended reading sessions, along with a bundled T-Pen 2 stylus and Flipcase.

It comes in an Aerolite Grey color and has the same camera setup as the regular TAB A1. If you seek quick assistance while taking notes or browsing, the TAB A1 NXTPAPER includes Google Gemini and other integrated AI tools. Both tablets are now available through TCL’s website and Amazon.

If you desire a more compact and portable option, the TCL NXTPAPER 11 tablet at $199 offers an iPad mini-like experience with its own paper-like display.

Lenovo has recently updated its gaming tablet with the OLED display it desperately needed, aiming to introduce it to the U.S. market.

The Y700 Infinite finally addresses the OLED gap between Lenovo and Red Magic.

While there is a wide array of compact tablets available, options diminish quickly when searching for one tailored specifically for gaming. Apple’s seventh-generation iPad mini continues to be one of the top choices on the iOS front, while the Red Magic Astra stands out among Android alternatives. Lenovo’s Legion Tab Gen 5 is also part of the discussion but previously lacked a crucial feature that has become increasingly hard to ignore in premium tablets: OLED. Lenovo has now remedied that with a refreshed version that replaces the IPS panel with a 165Hz OLED display, making the compact Legion significantly more attractive.

The iPad mini upgrade I've been anticipating may arrive in October.

If you've been hesitating to purchase an iPad mini, it might be wise to hold off a bit longer. Reports suggest Apple is preparing a major display upgrade for its smallest tablet, set to be released before Halloween. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to launch an updated iPad mini featuring an OLED display by the end of October. This may not seem particularly groundbreaking given the prevalence of OLED screens in phones, TVs, and some of Apple’s other devices, but for the iPad mini, it
