      Apple has quietly updated its Magic Keyboard range, and if you pay attention, you'll spot a change in the keys. It's not a redesign; it's simply new labeling.

      What exactly has changed on the latest Magic Keyboard?

      On the updated models, keys such as Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, Return, and Delete now feature glyphs instead of text. For the full-size variants with a numeric keypad, the alterations are even more pronounced. Keys such as Home, Page Up, Page Down, End, Clear, and Enter have also replaced their text with symbols.

      Apple has refreshed four versions, including the standard Magic Keyboard, the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, and the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad, all offered in white and black. The sole model that has not been updated is the full-size variant without Touch ID, which seems poised for removal from Apple’s offerings.

      If this seems familiar, it's because Apple implemented a similar change to its MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Neo lineups earlier this year. Thus, this isn’t an entirely new design ethos; it’s simply Apple applying it to its desktop peripherals.

      Since the US English layout is also the default in countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, this change is not exclusive to US customers. Those accustomed to Apple’s British English or other European keyboards will already recognize these glyphs, as Apple has utilized them there for some time.

      So why does this still feel like a missed chance?

      The issue is that while Apple is making these minor aesthetic changes, it continues to overlook the one enhancement users have long requested: backlighting. Yes, even in 2026, Apple’s flagship keyboard still lacks the ability to illuminate in the dark. If you prefer typing at night or in low-light conditions, you'll be disappointed yet again.

      Having a fresh assortment of symbols is nice, but I would trade all of them for a backlit keyboard any day. Until then, we’ll have to continue searching for the correct key in the dark.
