EXCLUSIVE: Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly hint at ‘beautiful chaos’ in the second season of Dark Matter.

      Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly are back for season 2 of Blake Crouch’s popular sci-fi series, Dark Matter. After the events of season 1, the show continues to follow physicist Jason (Edgerton), his wife Daniela (Connelly), and their son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) as they journey through the Multiverse in search of a new place to live.

      In a conversation with Digital Trends, Edgerton and Connelly shared their experiences of reuniting for Dark Matter and discussed what fans should anticipate in the show's upcoming season, along with the new challenges their characters will encounter.

      **Digital Trends:** How does it feel to return to the series for season 2 and to work together again?

      **Connelly:** It was fantastic! I was thrilled to come back and have more opportunities to explore the couple’s dynamics. In season one, we only got to see them together briefly before they were separated until a very intense reunion at the end. Having more time with them in this season was really enjoyable.

      **Digital Trends:** They certainly face numerous challenges together this season. As they navigate the Multiverse and try to evade various threats, do you think Jason and Daniela can find happiness in another universe?

      **Edgerton:** It’s amusing; sometimes I think they should just fly to Chicago, hop on a plane to Tahiti or Greece. I’d love to film that episode! I believe they will discover a place for themselves. Blake’s writing allows for a new experience in each world they visit, with challenges to overcome. They not only have to see if other versions of themselves exist but also manage practicalities like getting into these worlds, finding identification, and securing jobs and housing. Simultaneously, they must remain supportive of each other. Jason grapples with his guilt, feeling responsible for their situation. I do have hope for them. There are new places they find in season 2—some are unpleasant, but one seems promising. I won't give away any spoilers.

      **Digital Trends:** What was the most exciting aspect of filming this season? Were there any particular challenges?

      **Connelly:** There were certainly practical challenges, like the tornado world we shot in, which involved rain machines and wind machines. Additionally, I had the unique experience of working with an aspect of myself, which was quite unusual and something I hadn’t done before. It was a strange experience in many ways.

      **Digital Trends:** What can fans expect from season 2, and how does it compare to season 1?

      **Edgerton:** Season 2 has a beautiful chaos to it, filled with endless possibilities and various characters’ journeys, leading to a multitude of outcomes for each. This chaos is cleverly intertwined with the technology used, emphasizing the need for human beings to consciously choose how to utilize it. For our family, the question becomes whether they use it to escape or to establish a home. Fans should look forward to a deeper exploration of the characters they met in season 1, along with the same wild spectacle but with an added layer of madness and chaos.

      **Connelly:** I agree; everything is amplified this season. The exploratory elements are even more stunning. The show has always contained entertaining and playful moments, and those are heightened here. There's also a domestic drama aspect that gets explored more deeply in season 2. So, yes, everything feels more pronounced.

      **Digital Trends:** Do you envision working together on a third season of the series?

      **Edgerton:** I can’t say for sure.

      **Digital Trends:** Really?

      **Edgerton:** Well, with television, if the fans love it, there’s a chance for more seasons, and that appreciation means a lot to us. We all enjoy each other’s company and the collaborative environment. Everyone contributes positively, and we genuinely care for one another. The team feels like a big family, and it's ultimately up to the fans—if they express their love for it, we’ll likely continue.

      **Digital Trends:** Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say to the fans?

      **Connelly:** I hope fans truly enjoy the show. We love making it, and I had a fantastic time collaborating with everyone. We hope the audience has a great experience. The feedback from fans after season 1 was special, and Blake is keen to respond to their reactions.

      **Edgerton:** Fans sometimes express their expectations for characters, and I think it’s Blake’s role to satisfy those expectations while also surprising the audience. The input from fans can significantly influence how the show evolves.
