Smart glasses aim to simplify the process of capturing moments without the need to use a phone. However, when those moments occur in a movie theater, the situation becomes more complex. Cinemas throughout the UK are contemplating restrictions on smart glasses equipped with cameras, including Meta’s Ray-Ban, due to fears that they could be used to secretly record and pirate films.
The UK Cinema Association (UKCA), which represents cinema operators nationwide, indicates that some locations are considering policies to either limit or entirely ban camera-enabled glasses. While no widespread prohibitions are currently in place among its members, this could change as smart glasses gain popularity.
Smart glasses present a new challenge for cinemas
Piracy has long been a concern for theaters, but smart glasses complicate the issue. It is relatively easy to detect someone using a smartphone or camera during a screening, but a person wearing glasses is much harder to notice. Although Meta’s glasses include a privacy feature designed to make recording more apparent—a front LED light that flashes while the camera is active—concerns persist. Individuals have already reported being filmed without their awareness. Other venues in the UK, such as ATG Theatres, have resisted smart glasses by prohibiting filming during performances and reserving the right to ask patrons wearing such glasses to remove them. Wetherspoons has also criticized these camera-equipped glasses, with CEO Tim Martin claiming that people should not be able to record anyone without consent. For movie theaters, the potential for glasses to serve as hands-free camcorders aimed at the screen poses another reason for caution.
However, banning them is not straightforward
There’s another aspect to consider: smart glasses are not merely small cameras attached to someone's face. Meta contends that its glasses offer genuine utility, particularly for users who are blind or have low vision. Functions like live translation and hands-free assistance can enhance accessibility in scenarios where reaching for a phone is impractical. The UKCA recognizes this too. Smart glasses could benefit moviegoers with accessibility needs by providing personalized subtitles. Consequently, an outright ban could eliminate a genuinely valuable tool while attempting to tackle the piracy issue.
This situation leaves cinemas with a challenging balancing act. They must safeguard films and the privacy of theatergoers while not excluding those who rely on the technology. The UKCA notes that this issue is still unfolding, and policies will need to adapt proportionately as technology advances. However, as smart glasses grow increasingly capable, cinemas may soon need to determine whether to allow them in theaters during your next movie outing.
