ChatGPT can now access your Apple Messages conversations on Mac.
A new integration of ChatGPT now incorporates Apple Messages, adding another layer of context on your Mac.
ChatGPT is becoming increasingly integrated within the Mac environment, with a recent update introducing support for Apple Messages. This feature allows users to import conversations from the Messages app into ChatGPT, providing the assistant with additional context without the necessity for users to manually copy and paste entire chats.
Another application enhances ChatGPT’s expanding ecosystem
This integration is part of a larger effort to transform ChatGPT into a more practical desktop assistant, moving beyond a simple chatbot in its own window. OpenAI is enhancing the Mac application’s capability to interact with other apps and sources of information, including its Computer History feature, which can draw from selected activities within compatible applications and websites.
Everyday chats have become simpler with the new Apple Messages plugin. Users can search messages, stay updated on conversations, draft responses, and send replies—all through ChatGPT on their Mac. This feature is now available in ChatGPT Work and Codex on desktop.
Messages is a particularly notable addition since conversations often contain information that users may wish to revisit later. Instead of sifting through lengthy threads, users can input that context into ChatGPT and request a summary of the conversation, extract essential details, or assist with relevant information within it.
OpenAI's overarching desktop strategy is clearly moving in this direction. The current Mac application combines ChatGPT with Work and Codex, and its connected apps and plugins enable the assistant to work with external tools and information, rather than confining everything to a standalone chat.
But this is where it becomes personal
Granting ChatGPT access to Messages is notably more sensitive than linking tools like Google Drive. Messages can contain private conversations, personal information, addresses, financial data, and other details that users likely do not intend for an AI assistant to access. Therefore, the permissions and privacy controls are crucial. Apple’s existing ChatGPT integration already emphasizes that users have control over when information is sent to ChatGPT, with Siri prompting for permission before sending files.
Thus, the Messages integration may appear to be a minor feature, but it carries significant implications. ChatGPT is gradually transitioning from being just an assistant that users interact with to one that can comprehend more of what they are already doing on their devices. This evolution is undeniably beneficial, but as it gains access to more of a user's digital life, understanding what ChatGPT sees, when it sees it, and where that information is directed becomes increasingly important.
