Sennheiser has just released earbuds that you won't need to discard when the battery runs out.
Flagship audio, Dolby Atmos, and a battery you can replace on your own.
Sennheiser has just unveiled the Momentum True Wireless 5, which essentially combines the best features of its full-size Momentum 5 Wireless headphones into a compact, more comfortable earbud design. The earbuds will begin shipping on September 3rd, priced at $299.95.
What’s new in terms of sound?
The earbuds are equipped with Sennheiser’s 7mm TrueResponse dynamic transducer, produced and tested at the company’s facility in Tullamore, Ireland. They utilize Bluetooth 6.0 with aptX Adaptive support, allowing for high-resolution audio of up to 24-bit and 96kHz, including aptX Lossless for bit-perfect sound reproduction.
The noise cancellation feature has also seen improvements. A newly designed ear tip works alongside a four-microphone array for the adaptive hybrid ANC system, complemented by an automatic anti-wind mode and a transparency mode that Sennheiser claims is its most natural to date.
The earbuds also come with support for Dolby Atmos with head tracking for spatial audio. During calls, six microphones and two bone-conduction voice accelerometers collaborate with an AI speech-extraction algorithm to help isolate your voice amidst background noise.
The housing of the earbuds has been reshaped, which Sennheiser notes 73% of testers found more comfortable than the earlier version. They have an IP54 rating for dust, sweat, and splash resistance, and the charging case is now narrower, designed for easier pocket fitting.
Battery life offers 12 hours of continuous playback on a single charge, with the case providing two additional charges for a total of up to 40 hours. An 8-minute quick charge gives approximately an hour of playback.
What about the replaceable battery?
The most significant update is the battery system. Both the earbuds and the wireless charging case are equipped with user-replaceable batteries, allowing you to change the cells yourself using a small screwdriver instead of having to buy new earbuds when the battery lifespan diminishes.
I loved my AirPods Pro, but the only reason I had to replace them was due to the battery life declining over three years, rendering them nearly unusable. If I had the option to change the battery, I would have chosen that over spending money on a new pair.
This is why the new Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds represent a major advancement for the industry. They may not be the first earbuds to offer this feature, but they are among the first from a mainstream brand, which should prompt other companies to take notice.
The Momentum True Wireless 5 will be available in five colors: Graphite, Cream, Copper, Denim, and Lavender, starting September 3rd from sennheiser-hearing.com and select retailers.

Sony REON Pocket Pro Plus review: Quiet personal cooling is a pleasure, but comes at a price.
Say goodbye to neck fans.
In a recent examination of Sony’s newest wearable cooler, I must admit that walking around with a gadget secured to my neck doesn’t necessarily align with my idea of stylish. However, scientists have presented a compelling case for me to reconsider.
Researchers at Concordia University compared wearable face and neck fans to standard desk fans, both bladed and bladeless, and discovered that targeting a small temperature-sensitive area of the body can yield surprisingly effective cooling. Wearable devices managed to bring overall thermal comfort closer to what larger desktop fans achieved while consuming less energy and causing fewer unwanted drafts for those nearby.
You’ll need to hold off until 2027 for those rumored AirPods with built-in cameras.
Despite an inadvertent video leak within macOS, Apple’s AI-powered earbuds are still on schedule for 2027.
Although Apple may have unintentionally shown everyone a glimpse of its most unusual AirPods yet, the actual release timeline remains unchanged. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple’s camera-equipped AI AirPods are set for 2027, regardless of the leaked video from a developer version of macOS demonstrating the earbuds in use. The leak suggested they were closer to release than they actually are.
