Meta's smart glasses are now being utilized by school bullies.
Teenagers are utilizing camera-equipped glasses to intimidate their peers and share the footage on Instagram and TikTok, where it remained accessible until Futurism intervened.
Recently, Instagram has been working on removing harassment videos captured using Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The platform deactivated two pick-up artist accounts with over a million followers after discovering they were posting videos of women filmed without their consent. However, a recent investigation by Business Insider highlights that the efforts to eliminate such content have not been very effective, with numerous similar videos still being shared on the platform.
This challenge is not just limited to public harassment. A report from Futurism indicates that teenage boys have been using Meta's smart glasses to record teachers and classmates at school, often without their knowledge, and sharing these clips on TikTok and Instagram. Much of this content remained online until the publication reached out to both platforms directly.
These videos extend beyond simple pranks.
Futurism uncovered instances of students using the glasses to capture interactions with educators and classmates, with some recordings escalating to harassment directed at girls. The clips show boys approaching girls, pursuing them even when they attempt to escape, and ridiculing them based on their appearance.
Other videos depict students recording teachers and peers during confrontations, transforming private or uncomfortable situations into social media fodder. The design of the glasses facilitates this process by allowing recordings from the user's perspective without clearly indicating that filming is taking place, which means individuals may appear in videos without realizing they are being recorded, let alone agreeing to have the footage shared online.
Meta removed the flagged videos.
The larger concern is that many of these clips were not automatically identified by the platforms. Futurism discovered videos on both TikTok and Instagram that breached their guidelines, yet they remained accessible until the publication explicitly flagged the content.
After being notified, Meta took down the Instagram videos that were highlighted, and TikTok also removed the flagged footage. This points to a failure in the moderation systems to detect at least some of the problematic behavior that Meta has pledged to address in its broader crackdown on harassment videos filmed with the glasses.
This issue is particularly alarming given that the technology is being used to target minors. While Meta is working to eliminate the most egregious examples of "rizzcam" content, these school videos indicate that the problem is already extending to a significantly younger demographic.
