      According to Comcast, WiFi Motion operates by monitoring variations in the radio signal between an Xfinity router and a connected device. When motion is detected that disrupts the signal, the app notifies the user. The company claims this is done without recording any video, taking images, or identifying individuals. They promote the tool as a means of awareness rather than a complete security camera system.

      The feature is optional and is offered at no cost to internet customers who have a recent Xfinity gateway, as reported by The Verge. It is associated with three modes in the app: Home Watch, Away Watch, and Dark Watch. Users can activate or deactivate motion sensing based on whether they are at home, away, or asleep.

      Xfinity Shield offerings

      WiFi Motion is just one component of a broader bundle. The free version, WiFi Shield, also includes Comcast's network cybersecurity measures and a suite of parental controls. The cybersecurity features protect against approximately 30 million threats daily, according to the company. Comcast mentions that the average customer connects 36 devices to their home WiFi.

      There is also a paid version. Shield Select costs $15 a month and includes an indoor camera, sensors for doors and windows, cloud video storage, and a 24/7 emergency-response option. The camera is described as AI-driven, capable of distinguishing between people, pets, vehicles, and package deliveries.

      CNET reporter Tyler Lacoma pointed out that such recognition features are not novel; cameras have been capable of differentiating between people and packages long before the recent surge in AI technology.

      Functionality of the sensing system

      The technology has certain limitations and settings. It requires the gateway along with stationary devices, like thermostats or speakers, rather than mobile phones, as reported by The Register. Comcast recommends positioning devices to allow signals to cross the monitored areas and to regularly check coverage.

      Users have the option to adjust the sensitivity. There’s a setting that can instruct the system to disregard small pets, although Comcast cautions that this might also overlook small children, according to The Register. Sensitivity can be adjusted to low, medium, or high levels, with the highest setting recommended for standalone homes and lower settings for those with shared walls.

      Comcast has emphasized the privacy constraints. WiFi Motion does not track individuals or their exact movements, nor can it identify specific persons, the company asserts. They also noted that the service does not monitor the motion or notifications generated. However, The Register remarked that the language used leaves room for interpretation. Comcast regards WiFi Motion as a feature, not a home-security service, according to the outlet.

      Concerns regarding privacy

      The launch has raised concerns nonetheless. The Register highlighted Comcast’s own legal disclaimers, indicating that the service might not be as private as advertised.

      The fine print pertains to data sharing. Comcast states that it “may disclose information generated by your WiFi Motion to third parties without further notice to you,” which could include law enforcement inquiries, disputes involving Comcast, or court orders. The specifics of what information might be shared or which third parties—aside from law enforcement— are not clearly defined, The Register noted.

      Some commentators have expressed even greater concern. TechRadar's Alex Blake described the rollout as a potential “privacy nightmare,” arguing that millions of individuals who never intended for their routers to track them will now possess devices capable of doing just that. He raised concerns that a future upgrade could activate this feature by default and that presence data might become a target for hackers wanting to know when a home is unoccupied. Past data breaches of extensive personal information have also been acknowledged.

      An online comparison likened the system to a “Flock for your bedroom,” referencing Flock, a company known for its license plate cameras that have faced similar backlash. TechRadar noted this discussion.

      Not a novel concept

      WiFi sensing is not exclusive to Comcast. The company introduced WiFi Motion in 2025, and competitors have attempted similar concepts for years. Linksys provided a comparable service in 2021 but later abandoned it, while the smart-home company Plume has been employing WiFi sensing since 2020, as reported by The Register.

      The broader industry is increasingly moving in this direction. Lighting manufacturers, such as Philips Hue, have incorporated sensing technology into their products, and home-security firm ADT acquired Origin Wireless, a pioneer in this area. A formal WiFi-sensing standard, known as 802.11bf, was ratified in 2025. Chip manufacturers like Qualcomm and MediaTek are integrating this technology into new WiFi chips, according to The Register.

      This trend contributes to the overall apprehension.
