Your Mac could be experiencing an issue with screen sharing, and hackers are already aware of it.
A patch is only effective once it is installed.
If you've been delaying that macOS update in your notifications, this week is the time to stop and install it.
Earlier this month, Apple discreetly addressed a significant screen sharing vulnerability in macOS. Although this typically signifies that the problem is resolved, new evidence indicates that hackers had already infiltrated unpatched Macs, taken control of them, and utilized them for cryptocurrency mining before the fix was released.
So what went wrong with screen sharing?
The vulnerability allows malicious actors to access macOS screen sharing without the necessary system login credentials. Once inside, they can observe a victim's desktop and remotely control the mouse and keyboard without alerting the person actually using the device.
When attackers gain root access, they are said to install Monero cryptocurrency miners on every compromised Mac detected thus far, quietly consuming users' CPU resources and electricity in the background; hackers prioritize that over the local files.
Apple addressed the issue on August 6 with macOS Tahoe 26.6.1, describing it as improved state management for the authentication process, along with corresponding updates for Sonoma and Sequoia.
What occurs on a compromised Mac, and how can you protect yourself?
However, the National Cyber Security Center of the Netherlands has reported tracking actual abuse of that vulnerability on machines running unpatched or outdated macOS versions, where port 5900 (used for screen sharing) was accessible from the open internet.
Port 5900 has been a known vulnerability in remote access tools for years. macOS automatically opens that port when screen sharing is enabled, without a separate warning that it is now accessible from outside your network.
Due to the vulnerability circumventing authentication completely, scanning bots can automatically gain root access to exposed machines and install a cryptocurrency miner. If your Mac depends on screen sharing over an unprotected network, take action immediately.
I recommend updating to the latest macOS version as soon as possible. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update, and install the update. If immediate updating isn't possible, the safest temporary solution is to disable the feature altogether by going to System Settings > General > Sharing and turning off screen sharing.

Viture Pro 2 review: Affordable glasses that I preferred more for work than play.
Quick summary
Two years ago, I had the opportunity to test the Viture Pro smart glasses. I was impressed by the stylish design and the remarkable display units, but a few minor issues prevented them from being an instant purchase for XR enthusiasts. The price of $459 made them a challenging recommendation for anyone who isn't a dedicated fan or doesn't have the extra budget. The successor, however, is an entirely different story.
The US is attempting to eliminate foreign robots, but the local supply chain might not be ready.
Establishing a robot supply chain from scratch takes years, which Washington isn't allowing anyone. The FCC has a history of leveraging its Covered List to exclude Chinese technology from American markets, and robots have now become its latest target. Foreign-made humanoids, quadrupeds, and even robot vacuums must now be primarily manufactured in the U.S. to be sold here.
What does the new rule actually entail?
Acer has just released a competitor to the MacBook Neo with a superior display, memory, and ports.
Apple's MacBook Neo has rapidly become the laptop that budget Windows machines must contend with. Acer's newest Go Air appears to believe that the best response is to cover some hardware elements that Apple overlooked.
Acer has introduced a new Go Air configuration in China powered by Intel's recently released Core 5 320 processor. It features 12GB of LPDDR5 memory and a 512GB SSD for CNY 5,499, which translates to about $815. The global availability of this specific configuration has yet to be announced, but it seems nearly identical to the Acer Swift 14 that was presented during Computex 2026.
