Samsung's latest figures reveal just how much more expensive repairs are now.

Breaking your foldable screen has always been an expensive error, but Samsung has recently provided a clear and quite costly figure for this year. The company has confirmed the official repair costs for the entire Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, and repairing the inner display alone can cost more than some affordable phones retail for. With an increasing number of people purchasing foldable devices, it's crucial to be aware of these updated repair prices before making a decision.

So, what are the actual costs for screen repairs?
If you are purchasing or already have a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, handle it carefully, as replacing the inner screen could run you up to $639, which is $50 more than what it cost for the Fold 7.
The inner screen of the slightly smaller yet wider Fold 8 costs $579 to replace. In contrast, a damaged Galaxy Z Flip 8 screen will cost you $359 to fix, up from $329 for the Flip 7. Replacement for the outer screens of these phones is significantly less painful.
Repairing the cover display will cost $149 for the Fold 8 Ultra, $139 for the regular Fold 8, and $129 for the Flip 8 (though the price increase progression feels questionable, especially since the Flip 8 has the smallest cover screen). The cost of replacing the cover screen is approximately a quarter of what it costs for the inner display.

Is it advisable to purchase Samsung Care+?
These are the typical repair costs for screens out of warranty for all foldables. However, even the standard one-year warranty from the purchase date does not cover accidental damage from drops, excessive pressure, or liquid spills, which will void the standard warranty immediately.
Therefore, if you have a history of issues with smartphone screens, I highly recommend getting a Samsung Care+ plan for your foldable device. With this plan, your out-of-pocket expenses for repairs will be much lower: a one-time claim fee of about $29 for screen repairs.
If you have a Flip 8, you might manage without the insurance plan. However, owners of the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra should either use their devices with great care and a secure grip or consider purchasing the monthly or yearly Samsung Care+ plans. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

The Pixel 11 presents three reasons for me to switch from my iPhone 17, and I fear they might persuade me.
Google’s newest entry-level flagship makes my iPhone 17 look significantly less attractive.
As a professional smartphone reviewer, upgrading annually is mandatory; it’s part of my job, and as an iPhone user, it’s an easy decision. This year, I intended to transition from my basic iPhone 17 to Apple's next entry-level model, the iPhone 18. However, it seems Apple might not even release it this September. Pegatron, one of Apple's suppliers, indicated during an August 12 earnings call that the standard iPhone 18 won't be available next month (via Deccan Chronicle). Only the Pro, Pro Max, and the rumored foldable "Ultra" are on track for release, while the basic model has been pushed to early 2027. This alone alters my plans, but it’s just one of many challenges for Apple: the Pixel 11.
I’ve waited far too long for Pixels to introduce this annoyingly simple gesture.
Google, just implement the double-tap-to-lock gesture already.
Whenever I switch from any Android phone to a Pixel, there’s one simple gesture absent that consistently frustrates me. On a modern Galaxy phone or even a device from Xiaomi, I can double-tap a blank area on the home screen to instantly turn off the display. Samsung has had this feature available since Android 11. Unfortunately, on a Pixel, I still have to reach for the power button.
Admittedly, Google isn’t the sole culprit; Motorola’s stock Android devices, like the Razr Fold, also lack this basic function. Fortunately, there might be a change on the horizon. Android Authority discovered updated code strings in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 that hint at Google's long-anticipated double-tap-to-sleep feature. Even better, it seems Google has expanded this beyond the lock screen to the home screen, which is precisely where I want it.
Samsung may intensify its focus on foldables in 2027 with five new rumored models.
