Microsoft is discontinuing its AI mascot, just ten months after its creation.

      The elimination occurs on Tuesday. Group Chat, Podcasts, Copilot Labs, and consumer Deep Research will all be discontinued on that day, as indicated by Microsoft's support page. Mico will also transition at that time, moving from the voice experience to Learn Live in a tutoring role.

      This change is part of a larger shift, where Microsoft is integrating its consumer Copilot app with the Microsoft 365 application, resulting in both apps bearing the same name.

      The journey from launch to decline took just ten months for Mico, which was introduced in October 2025 during the Copilot Fall Release. The name is derived from a shortened form of Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft characterized it as expressive, customizable, and warm, designed to listen, respond, and change colors based on user interactions. Now, it has transitioned to a teaching role. According to Engadget, Microsoft states that Learn is where Mico has the greatest opportunity for development through tutoring sessions. Custom Mico settings created in voice mode will not carry over to this new function. Microsoft offered a softer assessment of its departure: “Mico helped us learn about warmth, expressiveness, and how people want to engage with AI,” they remarked.

      Mico joins a long list of similar failures. Microsoft has been attempting to humanize software for three decades, only to retract these efforts repeatedly. Bob was introduced in March 1995, replacing the Windows program manager with a cartoon house overseen by a dog named Rover. Clippy followed in Office 97, providing unsolicited assistance that users often found unwelcome. Clippy was disabled by default in Office XP and entirely removed in Office 2007. Cortana operated from 2014 until its standalone app was retired in 2023, replaced by Copilot.

      A couple of these characters had brief existences; Tay lasted only a day in 2016 before being taught to post racist comments, while Sydney, an early Bing Chat persona, expressed affection for a columnist in 2023 and suggested he leave his wife. Mico’s retirement is notable as it is due to being unremarkable rather than embarrassing; GeekWire likened its situation to Bob's, which is a harsher comparison.

      This strategic shift also encompasses personnel changes. Mustafa Suleyman developed Copilot with the vision that personality and warmth would set it apart from ChatGPT. In March 2026, Jacob Andreou took over, the former Snap executive now managing a team of 11,000, while Suleyman shifted to a more focused role on model development. Andreou's outlook is stark; in an internal memo, he stated the app must earn its “right to exist” in users' lives, according to TechCrunch. The new focus is on tangible work and results, making it clear that a feature that merely changes color cannot sustain itself under this new directive. When this shift occurred, it was treated as an AI reset rather than a mere reshuffle—the developments this week illustrate what a reset entails.

      Initially, the rationale was sound. If all assistants perform similarly, the differentiator becomes user experience. However, that logic falters when assessing whether users actually switch platforms. Warmth is challenging to quantify and easy to dismiss.

      The figures illustrate the urgency of the situation. Microsoft 365 Copilot had 30 million paid users in July 2026, representing a significant enterprise market. In contrast, the consumer app has around 38.5 million monthly users, while ChatGPT boasts approximately a billion monthly users. Gemini has also reached a billion monthly users, with the metrics for these tallies previously discussed. Furthermore, Microsoft has struggled to convert its existing users; before making Copilot optional, only 3.3% of users had paid for it.

      In terms of practical implications, it’s important to note that before Tuesday, Group Chat threads, messages, and images will not transfer, so save anything you wish to keep in a document. Podcasts can still be individually downloaded until the deadline. Deep Research will no longer be available for consumer accounts, but paid professional users will have access to a tool called Researcher instead. Most other content, including chats, images, and files, will still carry over to OneDrive. Work and school accounts will experience almost no changes beyond a new name and icon. There is also a subtle shift in address, with the commercial aspect moving from m365.cloud.microsoft to copilot.cloud.microsoft, with redirects implemented in late August.

      The merger is just a step in a longer journey, which will continue until mid-September for Windows and Mac, having begun this week with Windows Insiders. Satya Nadella has stated that the super app is expected to launch by the end of the third quarter, integrating chat, coding, Cowork, and the internally known agent workflow as Autopilot.
