Bid farewell to Chronicle. ChatGPT's new Computer History feature surpasses it.

Bid farewell to Chronicle. ChatGPT's new Computer History feature surpasses it.

You determine what it retains, and that’s what makes this update genuinely beneficial.

OpenAI has just launched Computer History for the ChatGPT desktop application, and if you found Chronicle intriguing but perhaps a bit too focused on screenshots, this update should be reassuring.

      What is Computer History?

Rather than capturing screenshots like Chronicle, Computer History logs your clicks, keystrokes, and application switches through macOS’s accessibility system, transforming that activity into text summaries and a timeline you can scroll through. Consider it as ChatGPT quietly recording your daily activities to assist you later.

ChatGPT can now remember your actions across various apps and websites on your computer. With Computer History in the desktop app, future interactions feel more tailored and require less background explanation. Once activated, you can ask ChatGPT about what you were doing before your last break or where your proposal document went. It examines your recent activities and directs you accordingly, sparing you from having to recall your entire morning.

If you find yourself repeating tasks, Computer History can recognize this pattern and recommend that you turn it into a skill or automation. You simply review the recommendation and allow Codex to create it for you.

How do you activate it, and is it truly private?

Computer History is disabled by default and remains so until you activate it. To enable it, go to Settings → Integrations, and select Computer History. You'll also need to turn on Memories, as that allows ChatGPT to utilize this context throughout your conversations.

You control which apps and websites are permitted to contribute, and private browsing remains unaffected. Additionally, there is a menu bar shortcut to pause activity tracking whenever you need a break, along with an option to erase your history at any time.

      OpenAI

If you're in a Business or Enterprise workspace, your administrator must grant access first, and you must opt in as well. Pro users can enable it through the settings.

Overall, this appears to be a robust privacy-focused enhancement over Chronicle, and I appreciate that OpenAI is offering users considerable control over what is remembered.
