Reports indicate that Samsung is utilizing Claude to accelerate its chip design process.
Samsung engineers are employing Claude Code to automate certain aspects of semiconductor verification and software development, with one task being completed in two days rather than extending over a month.
According to Chosun Biz, Samsung has turned to AI to enhance one of the more time-consuming and challenging processes involved in chip design. The report indicates that the company’s engineers have utilized Anthropic’s Claude to significantly expedite particular tasks, with one project reportedly being finalized approximately fifteen times faster than the typical timeframe.
Samsung has reduced one chip verification task from more than a month to a mere two days.
The report reveals that the System LSI division of Samsung Electronics has started implementing Claude Code for semiconductor verification and general software development. The developers gained access to this tool back in May, and its use was later broadened to include specialized chip design work.
Thanks to Claude, engineers are said to have finished the verification environment and testing for a system-on-chip (SoC) project in just two days, a process originally anticipated to take over a month. In another instance, a second-year engineer, inexperienced with Claude Code or USB communication standards, managed to complete a task that usually required about a month in only one day.
AI could assist Samsung in compensating for its smaller chip design workforce.
These achievements are particularly crucial for the System LSI division, which has significantly fewer employees compared to some larger competitors. It is estimated that this division comprises around 6,000 employees, whereas its main competitor, Qualcomm, boasts over 52,000.
Samsung seems to be leveraging AI to close this gap by assigning repetitive tasks and aiding engineers in working with unfamiliar technologies. However, the company is not viewing Claude as a substitute for human engineers, as it has faced instances where the AI misinterpreted instructions, altered unrelated work, or attempted to modify circuit design code when it was meant to only analyze verification results.
To mitigate such problems, Samsung is ensuring that engineers oversee Claude’s tasks and review its outputs before proceeding with any steps. If the company can manage errors effectively, Claude might provide the necessary productivity boost for Samsung’s smaller chip design team to compete with significantly larger rivals.
