The AI Sales Engineer is entering the meeting.

As voice agents and realistic avatars integrate into enterprise software, the sales call serves as a critical case study for evaluating whether AI can achieve more than just summarizing a conversation post-call. This challenge is familiar to anyone who has participated in a software demonstration: when a buyer poses queries about security reviews, integration scenarios, migration strategies, or competitive comparisons, the response often relies on a sales engineer who may be engaged in another call. One company addressing this change is 1mind, a San Francisco startup that develops AI sales agents, termed Superhumans, for web, product, email, and live sales interactions. Their Ride-Along product introduces the concept of an AI that actively participates in real-time sales calls, directly addressing buyers.

The sidebar assistant narrative is no longer exhaustive.

The initial phase of sales automation suited the web form era well. The method focused on capturing visitors, qualifying accounts, scheduling meetings, and entering leads into a CRM, all to streamline the sales queue.

While this approach helped sales personnel organize demand, it did not alleviate the buyer's frustrations. In numerous instances, it only made transitions appear smoother from the company's perspective. A potential customer communicates their concerns to a chatbot, then again to a sales development representative (SDR), and subsequently to an account executive, facing yet another wait for a sales engineer when the dialogue turns technical. The company perceives a streamlined process, while the buyer experiences redundancy.

1mind refers to this phenomenon as the Handoff Tax. Regardless of terminology, the core issue has been documented by researchers studying B2B purchasing for years: when information fails to transition seamlessly between different individuals a buyer interacts with, the buyer notices the gaps. A delay at a critical time can hinder momentum, though the impact varies significantly from deal to deal and is challenging to generalize.

The fundamental concern revolves less around the volume of sales software and more about its intended purpose. Much of this technology was designed to assist sellers in managing buyers rather than facilitating buyers in achieving their goals. This distinction is evident in consumer technology, where users have grown accustomed to receiving answers, configurations, or purchasing paths immediately. In contrast, B2B software frequently requires buyers to await the next available human.

      When live calls encounter obstacles.

The most significant instance of the handoff occurs after the buyer has demonstrated clear intent. The meeting is scheduled, the account executive is informed, and the buyer is engaged enough to pose critical questions regarding security, implementation, integration, compliance, migration, or competitive positioning.

At this point, the representative may reach the limits of their knowledge.

A competent representative understands the importance of honesty. The standard response is known: the rep commits to following up after the call. While this is responsible, it also alters the dynamics of the deal. The buyer arrived prepared to make a decision or at least narrow their options, but now the answer shifts to another calendar event, a new email exchange, or a subsequent call with an unavailable specialist.

There is a structural reason for this recurring issue. Technical expertise is often unevenly distributed within sales teams because it must be. Sales engineers, security experts, solutions consultants, and product specialists are limited in number, and few companies can staff every live conversation with all the experts a buyer might require. The most challenging questions from buyers frequently arise when the relevant expertise is inaccessible.

This gap is driving sales AI to extend beyond mere note-taking and coaching. A note-taking assistant can summarize a missed question, while a coaching tool can recommend how a representative should respond in future interactions. Both can be beneficial, but neither resolves the buyer's pressing issue. Buyers don't need sellers to enhance their private advice after the moment has passed—they need credible answers while the decision is still actively being made.

When AI participates in the call.

1mind officially launched in November 2025 with $40 million in funding, including a $30 million Series A led by Battery Ventures. TechCrunch reported that the company, founded by Amanda Kahlow, former CEO of 6sense, had been adopted by over 30 companies, including HubSpot, LinkedIn, and New Relic.

The launch of Ride-Along clarifies the company's strategic direction. In their announcement, 1mind described Ride-Along as an AI that joins live sales calls as a visible, named sales engineer who speaks directly to buyers. This buyer-facing role differentiates it from private assistance for the sales representative and is intended to be an integral part of the meeting.

The concept involves a sales-engineer-type participant joining the video call alongside the account executive. It remains quiet until called upon, at which point it can address a technical or security inquiry, conduct a demonstration, or display relevant material, retreating when the rep resumes control. This AI prompts responses only when asked, relying solely on information approved by the company.

The design highlights a crucial difference in categories. Software aiding representatives is constructed to support sellers discretely, while a participant facing the buyer is directly addressed by that buyer.
