SpaceX's Starlink begins accepting orders in Vietnam, according to the conditions set by Hanoi.

      SpaceX’s Starlink has commenced accepting orders for its satellite-internet service in Vietnam, thereby entering one of the fastest-growing markets in Southeast Asia for Elon Musk’s orbital broadband. This marks a significant win for a business that has turned into SpaceX’s financial engine, although this time the company is operating under Hanoi's conditions.

      The financial requirements are substantial. A monthly subscription is priced at VND1.71 million, or about $65, while the Standard 4X equipment kit costs VND10.27 million, roughly $390. Including shipping fees of around $22 and an initial deposit of approximately $70 that will later be credited toward the kit, the total expenditure in the first year approaches VND31.4 million, approximately $1,190. This positions it as a premium offering rather than a mass-market option.

      In exchange for this cost, Starlink guarantees download speeds of 135 to 305 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 to 40 Mbps, while highlighting that these speeds may vary based on location, network density, and weather conditions. Nevertheless, it remains a significant improvement over the unreliable or nonexistent connections it aims to replace. Most potential buyers are less concerned about maximum speeds and more focused on having a dependable signal.

      The service is being offered under a five-year pilot program, sanctioned by Vietnam, which will last until January 1, 2031. This framework is notably flexible in one aspect but deliberately limiting in another. It allows SpaceX to retain 100% local ownership, a rare allowance in Vietnam's tightly regulated telecom industry, yet restricts the number of subscribers to 600,000, preventing the venture from growing large enough to disrupt the local market.

      Vietnamese authorities are also monitoring the hardware. They mandate the use of officially distributed devices and have cautioned against imported equipment, which may incur fines or confiscation. Unauthorized Starlink dishes have quietly emerged in various parts of Asia, but Vietnam is making it clear that it prefers the service to be documented, taxed, and traceable, rather than illicitly imported. The message is straightforward: Starlink is welcome, as long as the government can monitor who is using it and how.

      In terms of pricing, Vietnam is on the higher end in the region. At around $1,190 annually, it is approximately 12% above the global average of about $1,061 and more expensive than Malaysia at around $909 and the Philippines at $1,045. However, it is still cheaper than Indonesia, where the annual cost is about $1,491, so while the price is higher, it is not excessively so by regional standards.

      Importantly, Starlink is not targeting urban residents who already have access to fiber. Its focus is on the underserved: rural areas, remote islands, fishing boats, construction sites, and farms—situations where a satellite dish is preferable to waiting for cables that may never be installed. This is the same void that the company fills in various regions, from Africa to the American Midwest, and the same gap that competitors like Amazon are just beginning to address.

      Vietnam officially licensed Starlink earlier in 2026 following the resolution of foreign ownership regulations that had previously hindered its entry, a move facilitated by the broader U.S. trade climate. The timing is significant. Satellite broadband has subtly become a bargaining chip in the interactions between Washington and its trade partners, and Hanoi, eager to maintain a stable exporting relationship with the U.S., is aware of the situation.

      Allowing an American company to operate freely while maintaining strict control is a kind of compromise that keeps all parties satisfied. For SpaceX, Vietnam represents another location on its ever-expanding map, which has seen a recent series of price increases and where state-supported competitors are still establishing their presence. For Vietnam, it is a strategic decision to adopt American connectivity without increasing reliance on the U.S. At this point, both sides seem willing to consider this a fair exchange.
