Google's latest Tensor G6 introduces significant enhancements in performance, efficiency, and security for the Pixel 11 series.

      At first glance, the new Pixel 11 series might appear to be a minor update, but there is a significant change under the hood. All four models are equipped with Google's new Tensor G6 chip, which aims to enhance the speed, efficiency, and AI capabilities of this latest iteration of Pixels.

      Faster, smarter, and more efficient

      According to Google, the Tensor G6 offers browsing speeds that are up to 25% quicker and app loading times that are 15% faster compared to the previous Tensor G5. This chip combines an improved Image Signal Processor with a new TPU that Google claims is 50% more powerful than the prior version, facilitating features like the 120x Pro Zoom and Instant Night Sight in the Pro models. Google states that the latter allows users to take low-light shots up to 4.5 times more quickly.

      The same TPU also powers Gemini Nano, Google's on-device AI model, which the company asserts now operates with enhanced quality and reduced latency. Google has yet to disclose details about the chip's manufacturing process and core configuration, but will update this information as it becomes available.

      More secure and future-ready

      The Tensor G6 is paired with a new Titan M3 security coprocessor, designed for post-quantum cryptography, which Google says offers protection against "emerging, highly advanced digital attacks." The company further notes that the Titan M3 has achieved Common Criteria certification on par with that of SIMs and bank cards. The chip also supports quantum-safe secure boot and runs Trusty, Google’s Trusted Execution Environment, across all four devices.

      These advancements position the Tensor G6 as Google's most advanced custom silicon to date. Although it may not surpass the latest chips from Qualcomm or Apple in benchmark tests, the improvements in performance and efficiency should result in a smoother Pixel experience. How this translates to real-world usage remains to be seen.
