Google has not followed Apple's example after all.

I have to admit, tile-style trackers usually don't grab my attention, mainly because most just mimic the AirTag without any innovation. However, Google's first attempt at this category breaks that mold a bit.

The Pixel Tag, introduced today, is the thinnest tracker available, featuring a Bluetooth technology that neither Apple nor Samsung currently provides.

So, what makes the Pixel Tag different?

Unlike the typical coin shape, the Pixel Tag has a smooth, elongated capsule design, measuring 46.1mm by 28mm and only 5.4mm thick. That slender profile is more significant than it may seem. The AirTag 2 and Galaxy SmartTag 2 are both approximately 8mm thick.

Consequently, Google’s tag is about one-third thinner. This means it can easily slide into a wallet or passport sleeve without sticking out. Aside from its thickness, the device is encased in a soft Fog-colored polycarbonate shell with a metal panel on the back featuring Google’s G logo.

The more noteworthy aspect is its dual-tracking capability, highlighted by Bluetooth Channel Sounding (which requires Android 16 and Bluetooth 6.0). Instead of estimating distance based on signal strength—a method that can be misled by physical barriers or body interference—Bluetooth 6.0 determines distance through radio phase shifts, providing greater accuracy (less than one meter).

This capability enables Android devices lacking a specific Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip but equipped with Bluetooth v6.0 to achieve precise close-range location finding while making signal-spoofing and relay attacks much more challenging.

Google has kept other specifications aligned with Apple's established framework. The tag is powered by a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell, which lasts over a year. Additionally, an IP67 rating ensures it’s protected from dust and can withstand immersion in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes.

It will be available exclusively in the Fog finish. Pre-orders start on August 12, 2026, alongside the Pixel 11 lineup, with in-store sales commencing on August 20, 2026.

Datamaxxing is the latest AI trend, and for once, it could benefit your health goals.

Integrating fitness data with AI could transform vague health metrics into meaningful insights, though relying on it as a substitute for a doctor is another story.

Datamaxxing suggests a wellness trend that might involve spreadsheets, supplements, and too much free time. The core concept is quite sensible: people are sharing data from their wearable devices with AI chatbots to explain what their numbers mean. The Wall Street Journal has recently documented several individuals creating systems around this idea.

There’s a genuine need for AI in this area. A 2026 Nature Communications study found that while wearables excel at summarizing data, they struggle to provide personalized insights. An AI system developed by the researchers achieved 84% accuracy on objective numerical questions.
