Volkswagen has just enhanced the Atlas Cross Sport with increased power, additional features, and a stronger personality.

The updated 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport finally adopts the character it has always needed.

I've often felt that the Atlas Cross Sport resembled an Atlas that was still searching for its identity; it was competent yet somewhat unmemorable. Volkswagen seems to share this sentiment.

The automaker has now unveiled a completely redesigned 2027 Cross Sport. It features a more defined exterior, a truly premium interior, and, most importantly, increased horsepower. Additionally, it will be available early next year as the sportier five-seat option compared to the three-row Atlas.

So, what are the key changes inside and out?

Built on an enhanced MQB Evo platform, the new Cross Sport is approximately 4,968mm long, making it over 127mm shorter than its three-row counterpart. Its lower profile and steeply sloped rear roofline give it a sporty appearance.

The exterior update includes stacked LED headlights, an illuminated VW emblem on every trim except the base version, and a flush-mounted tailgate. Volkswagen is also introducing three new paint options, including a Blackberry Metallic color.

Inside, the cabin now features a wraparound dashboard, wooden accents, contrasting stitching, and ambient lighting, moving away from its previously utilitarian feel. Every trim is equipped with an upgraded 12-way adjustable driver's seat, and higher trims offer full back massage for both front seats.

What about the technology and engine specifications?

In line with global trends for larger displays, the 2027 Cross Sport comes with a 15-inch infotainment screen as standard across about 90% of the lineup, along with a new physical dial for volume and driving modes. Additionally, there’s a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster throughout.

Powering the vehicle is an upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that now delivers 282hp, representing a 13hp increase. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and offers optional 4Motion all-wheel drive.

While pricing details haven't been revealed yet, I anticipate the company will provide more information as the launch date approaches in early 2027. Given that the Atlas family accounts for roughly one-third of Volkswagen’s sales in the US, this redesign carries significant financial implications beyond merely refreshing an older model.
