Lenovo's upcoming ThinkBook may expand to feature a portable ultrawide configuration.

Your next ThinkBook might literally expand its screen when work becomes hectic.

      Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Rollable

Lenovo seems to continue exploring how much display it can fit into a laptop bag. A recent report from WindowsLatest highlights a design for a Lenovo ThinkBook featuring a display that can extend horizontally, potentially offering users significantly more desktop space without permanently increasing the laptop's size.

This design is reportedly linked to a Lenovo patent for a laptop capable of multiple configurations. The patent was submitted in August 2024 and was granted in the US on March 10, 2026, with Lenovo Beijing assigned as the holder.

The patent display shows the device in alternate usage configurations, implying a chassis that can change shape instead of staying fixed at one screen size. There are many details we still lack, including specific panel features, pricing, and hardware specifications.

Lenovo has already shown that this concept is feasible.

A horizontally expanding ThinkBook would logically follow for a company that has been redefining laptop screens over the last few years. The ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable transitioned from an experimental product to an actual item, boasting a 14-inch OLED screen that mechanically extends to 16.7 inches, effectively increasing the display area by approximately 50% for tasks like browsing, spreadsheet work, coding, and managing vertically stacked windows.

Lenovo’s documentation indicates that users can expand the screen using a keyboard shortcut or a gesture. Horizontal expansion would tackle a different challenge, allowing for side-by-side window arrangements, extended video editing timelines, or an ultrawide workspace without needing a portable monitor.

Lenovo has already revealed an even bolder version.

At CES 2026, Lenovo showcased the Legion Pro Rollable, which boasts a 16-inch OLED screen that can physically expand to 21.5 inches and eventually to 24 inches. Lenovo has labeled this as a proof of concept, primarily utilizing the increased width for ultrawide gaming.

The prototype is still in the developmental phase, and Lenovo has more engineering challenges before a horizontally rollable model becomes a mainstream production laptop. A ThinkBook edition could provide that technology with a much "broader" application. Lenovo has already launched a vertically expanding productivity laptop and displayed a horizontally expanding gaming laptop. The notion of crafting a productivity-focused ThinkBook from the latter idea no longer seems overly ambitious.
