Google DeepMind restructuring: Co-leads of Gemini depart to establish a startup.

      On Wednesday, Sundar Pichai's memo appreciated Jeff Dean for his “incredible 27-year journey” and noted that Dean would be starting a company with Sanjay Ghemawat. He shared these same names on X. Discovery Loop’s website mentions four individuals, excluding Quoc Le, co-founder of Google Brain, and Oriol Vinyals, whose bio on X highlights him as a “Gemini co-lead.” Dean's LinkedIn profile describes him as the “Gemini overall co-technical lead.” Consequently, on the same day Google announced the executive responsible for building Gemini 4, both of its co-technical leads departed.

      In the announcement from Google, Demis Hassabis is stepping back from day-to-day operations of Google DeepMind to become its chair and chief scientist at Alphabet. He retains leadership over Isomorphic Labs and will be moving to DeepMind’s new Platform 37 offices in London. Koray Kavukcuoglu, serving as the lab’s technology chief, will take on the role of senior vice president, reporting directly to Pichai. CNBC reported that he is now in charge of Gemini 4. Kavukcuoglu has been with DeepMind for 13 years, leading the deep learning team as well as projects like WaveNet and DQN, and there have been no objections to his promotion.

      Discovery Loop has only just started to take shape. According to Steven Levy, who interviewed all four founders for Wired, the idea materialized only weeks prior. They currently have no staff and no office space. Dean mentioned, “Our immediate order of business is to find office space.” The timing is almost too perfect, as on July 25, Dean spoke to 6,000 aspiring founders at Y Combinator’s Startup School, where he outlined the primary principles for starting in AI. Eleven days later, he announced his own venture.

      They presented a few VC firms with a pitch deck, which featured prior work on TensorFlow and TPUs—an uncommon highlight for founders. The premise is that “scientific discovery is bottlenecked,” as the website suggests. While the method of discovery is lauded as a great human invention, the execution is impeded. There’s still a need for someone to propose experiments, conduct them, review the outcomes, and iterate one step at a time. Discovery Loop intends to automate this process and run thousands of experiments concurrently. It will initially focus on machine learning research, then utilize its capabilities on its own stack as its first customer before tackling the Grand Challenges set by the National Academy of Engineering, targeting advancements in medicine, clean water, and cybersecurity.

      Le, who has spent years automating model design at Google, has a clear first target: “It might be that we will discover a different transformer architecture,” he mentioned to Wired. Vinyals pointed out a gap in their plan: “One of the things that we’ll be obviously very focused on is how these models come up with new ideas to try. That’s not something they currently excel at.” Vinod Khosla, who is providing funding for this initiative, was blunt, suggesting that the four could create something “larger than the impact that Google had.” He described his vision as a role reversal—where traditionally people use AI for research, here AI is positioned as the researcher.

      It is essential to note that this venture does not constitute a raid on Google, as they are acknowledging the support. Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures co-led the seed round, with backing from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, Doerr Capital, and Alphabet itself; according to the New York Times, Google has taken a stake. However, the size or valuation remains undisclosed. Jordan Jacobs from Radical Ventures will hold a board seat, and Google has agreed to be the cloud partner, providing computing resources for the first year. They are also interested in establishing a collaborative research framework on machine learning systems. Pichai stated, “Jeff and Sanjay helped to drive some of the most significant technology transitions,” citing everything from early search infrastructure to the neural networks that contributed to the modern AI revolution.
