      A leaked Microsoft roadmap shared with game publishers outlines the anticipated launch of Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program along with an extensive effort to enhance backwards compatibility. The document reportedly indicates that general availability is aimed for August, with a complete launch of original Xbox games on PC set for October, and a phased rollout for Xbox 360 games starting in 2027.

      Your disc may turn into a portable digital license.

      The upcoming Disc-to-Digital system reportedly operates by placing a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series game disc into an Xbox One or Series X equipped with an optical drive. Microsoft would then provide a digital license linked to the user’s account and that specific disc. This setup allows users to access their titles on various Xbox devices without the hassle of repeatedly using the disc.

      It seems Microsoft has also tackled the potential resale issue. Once the disc is sold, its digital entitlement will transfer to the new owner, revoking access from the previous account. This is crucial as it ensures gamers can still lend, trade, or sell compatible games.

      Publisher involvement appears to be voluntary. Companies can determine which games qualify and may have control over pricing, rights, and branding for the conversion process. Thus, some titles may incur a fee for digitization, while others may opt out entirely. It’s worth noting that a disc-drive console is necessary to begin the conversion, which unfortunately excludes Series S owners. The roadmap initially indicated a public beta in July and a general release in August, although these timelines may have changed.

      Xbox aims to enable a broader game experience across devices.

      Microsoft has already begun testing original Xbox compatibility on PC with titles like Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies, and Fuzion Frenzy. Owners of digital licenses can carry their games to compatible PCs and handhelds, with all four games also available via Game Pass.

      The leaked roadmap suggests the full launch of the program in October, hinting at a broader array of original Xbox titles to be released. Xbox 360 compatibility would gradually follow between 2027 and 2028. Games participating in this initiative are reportedly being prepared for Microsoft’s next-generation Project Helix console, Xbox-branded PCs, and handheld devices. Ultimately, publishers will decide which of their games to include, pricing, and whether they will be part of Game Pass.

      Sony plans to discontinue physical discs for new PlayStation titles in January 2028 without introducing a similar migration program. While Xbox seems to be heading toward an entirely digital future as well, this leaked roadmap could help ensure that generations of physical games are not left behind.
