Apple is finally introducing one of my favorite Continuity features to Windows.

      Your iPhone and Windows PC may soon be able to share a clipboard.

      I recently discussed Apple’s Continuity features and their importance in keeping me within the Apple ecosystem. One of the most convenient and frequently used features is the Universal Clipboard, which enables copying and pasting text and files across various Apple devices.

      Now, it appears that this feature is on its way to Windows PCs. According to MacRumors, Apple is reportedly in the process of allowing users to copy content on their iPhones and paste it directly into a Windows PC without the need for third-party applications.

      Why is Apple taking this step now?

      Apple isn't making this change purely out of goodwill. Microsoft has made a request through Apple’s EU interoperability initiative, a channel Apple established to adhere to the Digital Markets Act. Apple began evaluating the request in March and presented a project plan by June 26.

      According to Microsoft, the concept is straightforward. Users will be able to copy text or other content on their iPhones, making it available for pasting on a Windows PC, and vice versa. This process should work without needing any third-party applications. Essentially, they want the same functionality that Apple provides to its iPhone and Mac users. Due to the stringent requirements of the EU, Apple is compelled to comply.

      How will Apple implement this?

      Apple's proposed solution involves a familiar tool, AccessorySetupKit, which is already used for pairing third-party devices in the EU. Users would grant their paired Windows PC one-time permission to access content from their iPhone’s clipboard, after which synchronization would occur automatically in the background.

      When can you expect this feature to be available?

      Don't get your hopes up just yet. Apple has indicated that developing this functionality is a significant engineering challenge, and the timeline for completion is expected to extend until fall 2027. Even then, it will first be available in a developer beta, meaning regular users might have to wait until early 2028 to experience it.

      There’s a strong possibility that this feature will initially be limited to the EU, similar to how Apple introduced wearable pairing and notification forwarding for third-party accessories exclusively in Europe thus far. While some features from the DMA eventually become global, this remains a theoretical plan for now; however, it is a promising one.

      Copying content from an iPhone to a Windows PC should be one of the simplest tasks imaginable. While this process is seamless between an iPhone and a Mac, Windows users are still left waiting. Microsoft has officially requested Apple to facilitate interoperable clipboard access via the company's EU interoperability framework. This request, submitted on March 25, states that restrictions on iOS inhibit third-party platforms from offering an experience akin to Apple’s Universal Clipboard. Apple has now advanced to Phase III and has committed to developing a solution.

      Google is introducing extension review prompts directly in Chrome, although good ratings may not prevent malware.

      Google is gearing up to incorporate extension review links directly within Chrome, making feedback more accessible within the menus that users commonly utilize to manage their extensions. A change in Chromium, first identified by Windows Report, indicates that review options will appear in the Extensions menu, on the chrome://extensions management page, and in extension context menus. Only eligible Chrome Web Store extensions in good standing will qualify, and the feature remains under development.

      Google’s “uncopyable” passkeys may not be as secure as advertised.

      Passkeys have been promoted as a safer alternative to traditional passwords, claiming to protect against phishing, credential reuse, and password leaks. Google asserts that passkeys cannot be copied or inadvertently shared. However, recent findings suggest that they may not be as secure as the company claims. Security researchers (via BleepingComputer) have identified three methods through which malware can compromise the integrity of passkeys synced via Google Password Manager. Collectively known as Pass-ta-key, these attacks target Google Password Manager within Chrome on Windows systems that feature a Trusted Platform Module, with each attack requiring malware to be already present on the victim’s device.
