I recall when a $999 GPU seemed like the "high but justifiable" range, something that buyers would save for months to build their ideal gaming PC. Nvidia is about to shift that perspective to make that price seem reasonable.
In January, there were reports that AMD and Nvidia had cautioned their board partners about impending price increases.
So, how significant are these increases?
Following those claims, a report surfaced a week later suggesting a price rise of approximately 15-20% across Nvidia’s entire RTX 50 series. Now, around six months later, actual figures are emerging, and frankly, they are quite concerning.
According to current rates in the Chinese market, which may adjust slightly when US prices are announced, the RTX 5060 Ti could be priced at around $783, up from its launch price of $429. The RTX 5070 is projected to cost approximately $973, and the RTX 5070 Ti could reach $1,408, nearly doubling their original prices of $549 and $749, respectively.
The highest-end models are experiencing the most significant increases, primarily because their initial prices were already quite high. The RTX 5080, initially $999 at launch, is expected to rise to around $1,845, while the flagship RTX 5090 could jump from $1,999 to an astounding $3,843.
Why is this happening?
Compounding the issue is the fact that these prices represent Nvidia's base models. Custom cards from board partners, featuring enhanced cooling systems or factory overclocks, are likely to command even higher prices. The main driver behind this trend isn’t gaming demand; it’s the focus on AI.
Nvidia’s data center business, which generates substantial revenue, has made GPU manufacturing capacity a limited and lucrative resource, resulting in consumer-grade gaming cards being given lower priority.
If you're currently using a GPU, it may be wise to hold onto it a little longer. With rising console prices and the current situation, PC gaming is becoming an increasingly costly hobby. At this pace, building a gaming rig may soon necessitate a budget typically reserved for enthusiasts.
If this trend persists, we can expect AMD to implement similar price increases, rather than significantly undercutting Nvidia, since both companies are vying for the same limited manufacturing capacity at TSMC.
