Apple's Siri AI is free, but costs may arise once you begin using it.

It seems that the term "unlimited" AI may come with some qualifications and an iCloud+ upgrade prompt.

During Apple’s recent earnings call, there was a lot of positive news: record-breaking revenue from iPhones, a historic June quarter, and ongoing enthusiasm surrounding Siri AI. However, one detail that stood out during the analyst question and answer session was Apple’s indication that heavy users of Siri AI might eventually need a more comprehensive iCloud+ plan for seamless use.

Will dedicated Siri AI users face higher charges?

An analyst inquired about Apple's strategy for covering the computing expenses associated with Siri AI, especially given the apparent strong usage during the beta phase. CEO Tim Cook responded directly, indicating that Apple anticipates a demand for extensive usage and confirmed plans to introduce “upgrade possibilities on iCloud+ where users can purchase additional capacity.” In simpler terms, if you utilize Siri AI extensively, Apple prefers you to upgrade to a higher iCloud+ tier to help offset costs.

This was not a singular remark. Later in the call, when discussing whether Siri AI would impact Apple's capital expenditures, Cook reiterated the same concept, mentioning that high usage provides individuals “the ability… to move up on an iCloud plan as well.” He acknowledged that the decision of whether Apple should absorb these AI costs or transfer them through iCloud+ upgrades remains “a bit uncertain at the moment.”

This isn’t a first for Apple. Recall that the new AI capabilities in the Apple Home app are limited to the 2TB iCloud+ plan, which is priced at $9.99/month. Therefore, Apple has already set a precedent.

What implications does this have for users?

Nothing has been officially decided yet. Apple has not released any details regarding usage limits, pricing tiers, or timelines for these changes. However, it appears that the free tier of Siri AI may have some kind of usage ceiling, and exceeding it would prompt Apple to encourage you to upgrade your iCloud+ subscription.

If you already subscribe to iCloud+, this likely won’t be a significant issue. But for those hoping that Siri AI would remain free and limitless indefinitely, that seems unlikely.

OnePlus officially promotes gaming-centric enhancements for the OnePlus 16.

OnePlus has launched its teaser campaign for the OnePlus 16 by showcasing three upcoming performance enhancements.

While OnePlus may have exited North America and Europe, it is still active in launching new devices in other regions. Following a recent leak predicting an October release for the OnePlus 16 and disclosing several essential features, the company has now released its first official teaser. Although the teaser emphasizes performance improvements, another unofficial leak provides a sneak peek at the phone's design.

Apple’s new Upgrade plan might seem inexpensive until you consider who owns the device.

Apple Upgrade might be ideal for those who frequently upgrade their devices, but that demographic is not widespread.

Apple has discovered an effective method to make a costly iPhone more accessible. The Apple Upgrade program allows customers to lease qualifying devices through Klarna, with lease terms for iPhones lasting either 12 or 24 months. At the conclusion of the lease, users can return the device, initiate a new lease, or pay off the remaining balance to take ownership.

Initially, my concern revolved around the value lost when returning an iPhone that could have been sold or traded in. While that concern still holds, the program appears much more logical for a specific group of individuals who typically upgrade their iPhones annually. However, the question remains... how many people actually do that?
