Initially, everyone ridiculed Ferrari’s first electric vehicle. However, it has now become a successful seller.

Critics slammed it online. Buyers, however, proceeded to make their purchases.

      Ferrari Luce

Ferrari’s first electric vehicle, the Luce, had a challenging launch. Upon its introduction in May, social media harshly criticized its design, likening it to vehicles that cost significantly less, and investors were also displeased, which led to Ferrari’s shares on the Milan stock exchange dropping over 8% following the reveal. Even the former chairman of Ferrari, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, weighed in, stating that the car was unworthy of the prancing horse emblem.

Fast forward two months, and a report from the Financial Times referencing knowledgeable sources indicates that Ferrari has quietly met its 2026 sales goal for the Luce. While the company has not officially disclosed the figures, insiders suggest that it aimed to sell just under 500 units this year, achieving that number by July.

Not too shabby for a €550,000 electric vehicle designed by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, which has drawn criticism from a portion of the internet.

So, who is actually purchasing this car?

Sources close to Ferrari indicate that Chinese buyers have shown particularly strong interest, and feedback from tech entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley has also been favorable. This aligns with Ferrari’s strategy, as the company aims for the Luce to attract a newer, younger, and wealthier demographic already accustomed to electric vehicles, while leaving its traditional petrolhead collectors in peace. Reports suggest that dealers were instructed not to push conventional buyers toward the electric version.

The larger goal now is to sell 2,500 Luce units by 2030, approximately 600 units each year, which would represent around 5% of Ferrari’s overall sales. Analysts believe this target is feasible. CEO Benedetto Vigna maintains that Ferrari’s venture into electric vehicles won’t jeopardize its operating margin of 30%, as the company is deliberately keeping production volumes limited.

Why online criticism doesn’t always reflect reality

The initial success of the Ferrari Luce serves as a reminder that the backlash on social media regarding any product should not be taken too seriously. Ultimately, it is the actual buyers and consumers who will determine a product’s success.

Another recent illustration of this phenomenon comes from an entirely different field, specifically Christopher Nolan's film Odyssey. Upon the release of its trailer, the movie was ridiculed extensively for its armor design and casting decisions, among other aspects.

Yet, just 12 days after its release, the film has grossed over $700 million, marking a significant commercial achievement. Therefore, the next time you observe a product—be it a car or a movie—being criticized online, hold off on forming a judgment about its potential failure until it has had a chance to reach the audience.

Mazda chief mentions the MX-5 Miata could go electric

For years, the prospect of an electric Mazda MX-5 Miata seemed far-fetched. The small roadster has always been celebrated for its lightweight nature. Incorporating a heavy battery pack into the mix led many enthusiasts to believe that the Miata’s signature driving dynamics would be lost.

However, Mazda seems to have shifted its stance. In an interview with the German publication auto motor und sport, Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro confirmed that the next-generation MX-5 is being developed with the possibility of an all-electric version in mind. This does not imply that the iconic roadster will abandon gasoline power soon. Nonetheless, it indicates Mazda’s intention for the Miata to thrive in a future where internal combustion engines could become obsolete.
