Apple's new Upgrade plan won't impose restrictions for missed payments; however, three missed payments could terminate your lease.
Restricted Mode is still present in the iOS 27 beta, but Apple has stated it will not be applicable to defaults in Upgrade payments.
Apple recently unveiled its new Apple Upgrade leasing program, which enables customers to make monthly payments for an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch via Klarna. This initiative replaces the long-standing iPhone Upgrade Program and introduces leasing options for devices beyond just phones.
However, 9to5Mac discovered code in the iOS 27 beta that sparked concerns regarding the potential consequences of missed payments. The newly introduced App Managed Features system seemed capable of monitoring a customer’s payment status and could place a financed device into Restricted Mode.
Apple has since clarified that this system will not be utilized within its Upgrade program. In a statement to The Verge, Apple spokesperson Brian Bumbery confirmed that missed payments or defaults will not trigger Restricted Mode or impose any restrictions on device functionality.
According to the 9to5Mac report, Restricted Mode would restrict access to most applications while allowing basic functionalities like Phone, Settings, Wallet, Clock, and the App Store. A feature called Partner Finance Lock could have prevented users from lifting these restrictions via a factory reset or selling the device while payments were still outstanding.
Apple's announcement ensures that missed Apple Upgrade payments will not result in Restricted Mode or any other limitations on device capabilities. Nonetheless, the company has not elaborated on the purpose of the broader framework or its potential appearance in the final release of iOS 27.

Existing systems in the device financing sector already have similar functionalities. Google's Android DeviceLockManager permits finance providers to lock devices following missed payments, while Samsung’s Knox Guard provides banks and carriers the ability to restrict devices if payments are overdue.
Missing three payments can still terminate the lease
The Apple Upgrade program functions as a lease, rather than a typical installment plan. During the duration of the agreement, Klarna retains ownership of the device, allowing customers to return it, upgrade, or pay a final fee to keep it when the lease concludes. Klarna informed The Verge that failing to make three consecutive payments would result in the termination of the lease, requiring the customer to pay the entire outstanding balance.
Therefore, while Apple will not restrict access to applications, falling behind on payments can still lead to the termination of the agreement and the immediate requirement of the remaining amount due. Klarna's method of enforcing this is still unclear.
