In his initial announcement, Google DeepMind designer Vidy Thatte showcased this feature, demonstrating how the Apple-exclusive experiment utilizes Gemini to make the familiar website interface optional.

      This concept is intriguingly unusual, especially for those who have wished to customize their internet experience. However, it may be less enjoyable for those who designed the original page that is being altered.

      How Gem Browser transforms the web

      When you enter a fictional address, Gem Browser instantly generates a working website, complete with links to additional created pages. As you navigate through it, you can explore an internet that Gemini conjures.

      The newer functionality applies this same technology to real websites. A prompt can modify the appearance of a page without changing the actual site. While the publisher’s webpage remains available online, Gem Browser dictates what is displayed on the reader's device.

      What you observe is essentially Gemini's rendition of someone else's work.

      Who determines what readers see

      Typically, publishers control how their news is presented and how advertising supports it. Gem Browser adds an AI-generated layer between those choices and the audience.

      This layer could simplify a reader's experience by eliminating a crowded layout. However, it could also strip away context or hinder proper attribution. Readers must rely on Gemini to accurately reflect the content while essentially altering everything around it.

      Readers are presented with an interface tailored to their preferences. Publishers no longer have the assurance of how their output will appear by the time it reaches its audience.

      Should publishers be concerned?

      Currently, Gem Browser is an Apple-exclusive TestFlight experiment, and the need for a Gemini API key will likely keep it within the realm of enthusiasts for now. This week, a beta app is not set to dismantle the internet.

      Nonetheless, the fundamental concept is operational. A browser can place a generated experience over a genuine webpage, leaving the publisher responsible for content within an interface that they do not manage.

      The original page remains intact; it may simply become the version that users neglect to visit.
