With the introduction of the Galaxy Z Flip 8, users no longer need to resort to workarounds to access additional apps without opening the phone. Instead, Samsung has increased native support on the FlexWindow, allowing 16 apps to operate directly on the external display, while also simplifying the launch of nearly any other app.

      This update addresses one of the main issues that Flip users have faced for years and positions Samsung competitively alongside rivals like Motorola, whose Razr series has long provided a more versatile cover screen experience.

      Which apps are available on the Galaxy Z Flip 8 cover screen?

      The Z Flip 8 comes preloaded with 16 apps that are supported. Twelve of these are fully optimized system applications, including Bixby, Samsung Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Gallery, Samsung Health, Notes, Phone, and Voice Recorder, all accessible via a built-in app drawer.

      The remaining four are popular third-party apps essential for daily tasks. Google Maps, Google Messages, Netflix, and YouTube are categorized under a section labeled Labs, although Samsung mentions that the experience may not always be perfect. Additionally, the Now Bar and Now Nudge have been enhanced for quicker and more convenient access.

      What if your preferred app isn’t officially supported?

      Samsung has not eliminated the option to use unsupported apps; rather, it has streamlined the process. The Good Lock MultiStar module is still necessary for apps that aren’t officially optimized, but the Galaxy Z Flip 8 now displays a prompt on the cover screen to help users install and configure it. Previous Flip models required users to navigate through settings with the phone unfolded, which made the feature less intuitive.

      According to Android Authority, Samsung intends to extend this updated cover screen functionality to the Galaxy Z Flip 7. However, it remains uncertain if earlier models of the Galaxy Z Flip will receive similar enhancements through a future One UI 9 update.
