Substack is providing readers with a method to determine if the content they are accessing was created by a human or generated by a chatbot. The platform has teamed up with AI-detection company Pangram to launch new features that enable users to examine posts, notes, and replies for AI-produced text. CEO Chris Best unveiled these tools in a post titled “Against Claudefishing,” referring to content that relies on AI while claiming to be human-generated.
Functionality of the scanning tool
The scans can be conducted on any text exceeding one hundred words published from July 21 onwards, and the results will only be accessible to the requester. Best acknowledges that while Pangram has its limitations, independent assessments recognize it for its significant accuracy. This feature is currently available on web and iOS platforms, with an Android version expected to be released soon.

The introduction of Substack’s AI-detection feature coincides with a growing concern regarding AI-generated content across social media platforms. Best mentions a recent Pangram estimate indicating that up to forty percent of posts on certain platforms are completely generated by AI.
Writers can utilize the same scan prior to publication
In addition to readers, writers are also receiving new tools. Substack will now include a “How I make this” statement, allowing writers to explain their process and manage reader expectations from the outset. Additionally, writers will be able to run Pangram scans on their drafts before they are published, and they can report and remove scans of their published work that they deem erroneous. Best indicates that future enhancements may feature AI preferences within Reply Rules and options for readers to control recommendations.
For readers, this presents a rare opportunity for transparency, providing them with a genuine means to identify lower-quality AI content. Substack is not the only platform addressing this issue. LinkedIn has begun to limit the visibility of AI-generated posts and comments, while Meta is discreetly testing its own AI detection tool, which has yet to be officially launched. It remains to be seen if any of these tools can keep pace with the AI models they aim to detect.
