Instagram is finally providing a soundtrack revamp for your old posts.

Instagram is introducing a Replace Audio feature that enables users to change the music linked to their feed posts and carousels even after they have been published. The original post remains active during this process, retaining all its likes, comments, and shares.

Your post maintains all its engagement

In the past, altering a questionable soundtrack required users to delete the post and upload it anew, resulting in the loss of all interactions the original post had garnered, as well as its visibility in followers' feeds and on the user's profile. While this may seem insignificant to casual users, it could significantly affect creators' engagement with their audiences.

The updated process is much simpler. Users can open the post, tap the three-dot menu, select Edit, choose Audio, and pick a new track. According to Instagram’s Help Center, users can then specify the section of the new song they wish to use before confirming the change.

Creators can swap the audio as many times as they like without losing existing engagement. However, replacing the track will not give them an algorithmic advantage, as noted by Jimmy O’Keefe, head of creator product marketing at Instagram.

Despite the lack of a ranking boost, the feature is clearly beneficial. A creator can update an evergreen post, fix a soundtrack that no longer suits the content, or try out different audio tracks without needing to re-upload the entire post. Brands can also refresh sponsored posts or update content that has become dated due to changes in musical trends.

Instagram posts are becoming less permanent

The Replace Audio feature is part of Instagram’s ongoing initiative to allow users to edit content after it has been published. The platform now provides options for users to rearrange their profile grids, write different captions for individual carousel slides, and modify Stories post-publication.

These tools offer increased flexibility for casual users who notice errors too late. They also hold considerable strategic importance for professional creators, who can adjust their older posts to align with new campaigns or current musical trends while keeping their engagement intact.

This update is starting its rollout this week, specifically for published feed posts and carousels that utilize Instagram’s in-app audio library, rather than providing a complete video editor for all types of uploaded sounds. This update comes after the platform allowed users to edit their Instagram Stories post-upload.
