Xteink's compact e-reader has finally received the upgrades it needed.
Xteink has introduced the X4 Pro, an upgraded version of its compact e-reader that addresses many of the shortcomings of the original X4. This new model retains the same 4.3-inch display and magnetic design but comes with several enhancements, including a front light, touchscreen functionality, a larger battery, and unlocked firmware.
The original X4 was notable for its remarkable portability and minimalistic reading experience, though it was missing several essential features found in larger e-readers. The X4 Pro aims to fill these gaps while maintaining the small size that made the original model special.
Those missing features are now included
The most significant enhancement is an adjustable front light with both warm and cool temperature settings. Xteink has incorporated touch input while keeping physical page-turn buttons, allowing users to either tap the screen or turn pages with one hand.
Battery capacity has increased from 650mAh to 1,100mAh, marking a rise of approximately 69%. The X4 Pro is slightly smaller than its predecessor, now weighing 72 grams instead of 77 grams, while its thickness is nearly the same at 5.95mm.
The display continues to measure 4.3 inches and offers a resolution of 219 pixels per inch. It comes with a 16GB microSD card, supporting additional cards of up to 256GB. Features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and built-in magnets are also present, enabling the X4 Pro to attach to MagSafe and Qi2-compatible smartphones like the iPhone 17 and Pixel 10.
An upgrade comes with a curious trade-off
Xteink states that units bought directly from its website will ship without restrictions on third-party firmware, providing access to alternative software and developer projects. Its associated app and XT-Cloud service facilitate the transfer of books, wallpapers, feeds, and other content to the device.
However, there is a notable compromise regarding charging. The USB-C has been replaced by a pogo-pin connector and magnetic adapter, which means users will need to have an additional charging accessory on hand.
The X4 Pro is priced at $99 for its launch offer, reduced from a standard price of $109. Xteink expects orders to start shipping on August 2.
