Samsung introduces Galaxy credit card prior to Galaxy Unpacked event.
For many years, Samsung has aimed to elevate the Galaxy brand beyond just smartphones. Currently, the company's ecosystem encompasses foldables, smartwatches, televisions, home appliances, smart home products, and digital services. Now, it is adding a new element that is more focused on finances than on physical products.
Samsung has officially launched the Samsung Galaxy Card, its first branded credit card in the United States. Developed in collaboration with Barclays US Consumer Bank and functioning on the Visa network, this card rewards users for their everyday purchases, offering notably higher cashback for transactions made directly through Samsung.
Introducing a credit card just before Galaxy Unpacked might appear unconventional; however, it reflects the direction in which consumer technology companies are moving. As smartphones become harder to distinguish from one another, consumers are upgrading less frequently. This has prompted brands to explore avenues beyond hardware, seeking innovative methods to engage customers between product releases.
The most significant rewards are aimed at Samsung shoppers.
The Galaxy Card is tailored specifically for Samsung customers. Cardholders earn 5 percent cashback on qualifying purchases made directly from Samsung, providing the largest rewards to those buying a new Galaxy smartphone, tablet, television, or other Samsung items. For instance, a customer purchasing a premium foldable priced at about $1,500 could receive approximately $75 in cashback.
While the benefits primarily focus on Samsung's own store, they also extend to other purchases, albeit at lower reward rates. Transactions made via Samsung Wallet yield 3 percent cashback, eligible streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, and Spotify grant 2 percent, and all other purchases earn 1 percent cashback. Additionally, cardholders enjoy a 20 percent discount on Samsung VIP Advantage, the company's membership and extended warranty initiative.
Applications for the card open on July 22, and Samsung is providing a $200 bonus cashback incentive for customers who spend $2,000 within the first 90 days of account activation. The card will come in both virtual and premium metal physical formats.
Samsung's ecosystem now reaches beyond just devices.
Samsung is not trying to revolutionize the credit card market but is instead utilizing a strategy that has subtly gained traction in the tech industry. Apple has employed the Apple Card for years to reward customers engaging with its ecosystem, while Amazon offers several co-branded cards to attract shoppers back to its marketplace. Financial products are becoming an additional means of fostering customer loyalty, joining subscription services, cloud storage, and upgrade programs.
The Galaxy Card aligns perfectly with this strategy. Samsung indicates that the card integrates seamlessly with Samsung Wallet, allowing users to manage payments alongside compatible cards, IDs, digital keys, and passes. The experience is also built around Samsung Knox, the company's security platform, to give users confidence when storing financial data on Galaxy devices.
For current Galaxy users, the value is clear. If you are already purchasing Samsung items every few years, the cashback on those purchases serves as a beneficial perk. The card is unlikely to lure someone away from their existing ecosystem by itself, but that isn’t its main objective.
Rather, Samsung is strategically betting that loyalty in today’s market involves more than just superior hardware. It lies in enhancing every interaction with the Galaxy ecosystem, including the payment process, making it more rewarding.
