      Recently, independent developers have created some remarkably specific apps for Apple’s platforms. For instance, Glaze turns every Mac window into a retro CRT display, while Screen Test helps identify monitor defects before the return period ends. I recently discovered another app called Sharp, an iPhone application that utilizes a face scan to create and customize a skincare regimen.

      Sharp was developed by Esat, a student and solo developer from Germany, who claims that his own skincare challenges sparked this project. The app is primarily designed for individuals looking to begin a skincare routine but who are uncertain about which products to use or which areas of their skin need focus.

      The process starts with a guided scan lasting around 30 seconds. Sharp assesses the lighting, monitors your head’s position, and automatically captures several angles as you gradually turn your face. After the scan is finished, the app provides an overall Skin Score out of 100, breaking it down into six categories: clarity, oiliness, redness, pores and texture, the eye area, and hydration.

      Sharp leverages these results to formulate brief morning and evening routines. Each step comes with an explanation, and product recommendations are tailored to the user's scores and specified budget. Instead of suggesting broad categories like cleanser or moisturizer, the app recommends specific products.

      A particularly intriguing feature is the weekly re-scan. Sharp encourages users to repeat the process in similar lighting and positioning, allowing for comparisons between the latest scores and previous ones. The app can then revise the routine and product suggestions based on any observed changes. Users can track their progress over eight weeks, compare before-and-after photos, maintain a streak, and receive reminders about their routine via the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island.

      Sharp clarifies that its recommendations are cosmetic in nature and not intended as medical advice. According to its privacy policy, facial images are temporarily uploaded and processed through Google Gemini or OpenAI, with the images deleted from Sharp’s servers after analysis.

      The app is available for free download, and the initial scan and Skin Score require no payment. Premium access is priced at $4.99 per week, $39.99 annually with a three-day free trial, or a one-time payment of $79.99 for lifetime access.
