Apple is said to be updating its complete iPad lineup, with the first new model expected to arrive this fall.
A recent report outlines the upcoming updates for the iPad mini, entry-level iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Pro over the next year, starting with an OLED version of the iPad mini.
If you're considering purchasing a new iPad, you might want to wait a few months. A new report indicates that Apple is preparing for a significant refresh of its tablet range, with the first new model potentially launching as soon as this fall.
An OLED iPad mini is set to be the first release
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that a redesigned iPad mini with an OLED display, referred to as J510, will be the initial tablet to debut, expected in October. This timeline matches a leak from late last year, which also suggested a late 2026 launch.
If this information holds true, the smaller tablet will match the enhanced contrast and deeper blacks seen on the iPhone and iPad Pro. However, another leak indicates that the iPad mini may be limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, which Gurman's report does not mention.
Subsequent models are slated for 2027
The report also mentions a refresh of the entry-level iPad, codenamed J581, projected to be released in the first quarter of 2027. This model will not undergo major updates, with the most significant change likely being a faster chip.
The iPad Air, in both 11-inch and 13-inch versions, is expected to be updated in the spring, along with new iPad Pro models, following Apple's trend of refreshing mid-tier and high-end tablets together. New Apple Pencils are also anticipated to launch during the same period.
While new iPad models are forthcoming, a price drop is unlikely. Apple recently increased prices across its Mac and iPad lineup, raising the current iPad mini by $100 to $599. The OLED model may come with an even higher price tag, although its release could lead to discounts on the current model, making it a more appealing option later this year. The rest of the lineup is probably not immune to price changes due to the ongoing memory and storage shortages affecting the industry widely.
