Frontier becomes part of the Starlink network, offering high-speed internet during flights.
The airline intends to implement SpaceX's satellite-based Wi-Fi throughout its entire fleet beginning in 2027.
Frontier Airlines has not been known for providing excellent onboard Wi-Fi, and until now, it has not offered any in-flight internet service at all. However, that is about to change as Frontier Airlines has announced a collaboration with SpaceX's Starlink to offer high-speed, low-latency internet across its fleet. Installations are set to commence in early 2027, making Frontier the first ultra-low-cost airline in the United States to implement Starlink's satellite connectivity.
Passengers will be able to enjoy streaming, browsing, and even gaming while flying at 35,000 feet.
Frontier claims that Starlink will provide internet access from gate to gate, capable of supporting various activities like web browsing, messaging, video streaming, online gaming, and remote working. The airline indicates that the service will deliver the same fast, low-latency experience that Starlink is known for on the ground, made possible by its network of low-Earth orbit satellites.
This new connectivity will benefit not just passengers but also improve communications for pilots, flight attendants, maintenance crews, and ground operations, thereby enhancing airline operations along with the customer experience. The airline has not yet disclosed whether the in-flight service will incur a fee for passengers.
This is another achievement for Starlink’s efforts in the aviation sector.
Frontier's announcement reflects a broader trend within the airline industry. Over the past few years, airlines such as United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa Group, and British Airways have either initiated or announced the introduction of Starlink-powered Wi-Fi for their fleets, as airlines increasingly recognize that reliable internet can be a significant competitive advantage rather than just a luxury.
For Frontier, this initiative also fits into a wider strategy aimed at attracting more affluent travelers. The airline has recently added first-class seating, revamped its loyalty program, and is now enhancing onboard connectivity—features that would have seemed unusual for an ultra-low-cost carrier a few years back.
Interestingly, Frontier has transitioned from having no Wi-Fi to embracing what many consider the benchmark for in-flight internet. If Starlink performs as effectively in the air as it has on multiple other airlines, budget travelers may soon have one less complaint at 35,000 feet.
