OpenAI’s inaugural hardware offering resembles more of a companion than a traditional speaker.
For months, there have been speculations that OpenAI's inaugural hardware product might be a wearable AI device or the start of its long-term smartphone plans. However, it seems that the company's first gadget could actually be something much simpler yet arguably more ambitious. It is intended to control smart-home devices, play media, provide answers, respond to messages, and leverage the various functionalities of OpenAI's ChatGPT, according to sources familiar with the situation.

OpenAI’s initial AI device might ultimately be a speaker, despite the buzz surrounding the idea that the company is developing a wearable AI device and potentially a smartphone in the future. A Bloomberg report indicates that the speaker is envisioned as a human-like AI companion that will seamlessly integrate into the smart home environment.
“The key feature of the product is expected to be its personality and ability to engage with users on a human-like level,” the report notes.
This device is likely to act as a hub for a proactive AI agent, one that not only responds to user inquiries but also anticipates user needs in real-time.
More than just a speaker
Although it resembles a smart speaker, Bloomberg asserts that OpenAI perceives the product as something much larger: the company’s first AI-native computer. In essence, it could represent a physical version of the ChatGPT AI assistant, designed to stay close and offer assistance throughout the day rather than waiting for users to pose questions.
Significantly, the speaker will feature a mechanical design that allows for a degree of movement or directional flexibility, giving it a more animated quality compared to the smart speakers currently available. This concept is somewhat akin to what Apple has reportedly been developing over the years with the HomePod. It’s been suggested that Apple is working on its own smart display, likely mounted on a movable robotic arm, although OpenAI appears to favor a screen-free model that focuses purely on voice and AI interactions.

At the core of these human-machine interactions will be GPT-Live, the voice-first interface of ChatGPT, designed to facilitate remarkably natural conversations. Bloomberg also reports that the device will include a camera to perceive its environment, while an additional environmental sensor may enable it to detect context similarly to Amazon's presence-sensing Echo devices. The intention seems to be creating an assistant that understands commands and is also aware of its surroundings.
Just the start of OpenAI’s hardware ambitions
OpenAI’s smart speaker is anticipated to come with a rechargeable battery, allowing it to be portable rather than tethered to a wall outlet like conventional smart speakers. This means users could move it from room to room, permitting the AI companion to remain close throughout the day. Bloomberg further notes that this is merely the beginning. OpenAI is reportedly working on five distinct hardware products, with the smart speaker set to be the first to be released in 2027. This larger initiative is being shaped by LoveFrom, the design studio established by renowned former Apple design chief Jony Ive, which is assisting OpenAI in exploring a completely new range of AI-powered devices.

The timing of this development is particularly intriguing. Apple recently initiated a lawsuit alleging that OpenAI has been poaching employees and utilizing them to acquire confidential product information regarding future hardware. However, if Bloomberg’s report holds true, the company’s first device is not intended to be another smartphone or smart display. Instead, OpenAI seems to be betting that the next significant AI gadget could be something much more personal — a companion that quietly accompanies users throughout their day, understands their environment, and feels less like a gadget and more like a constant source of assistance.
